Still waiting for my confirmation. I’ve got a rack for two more bikes if I get confirmation otherwise I’ll be planning to enter ride negotiations with Husker and Dave.

While I can fit 5 bikes, realistically I can probably only take 1, maybe 2 other riders. Because girl and beagle will be in the car for the hiking while I am cycling. So, yes, you’re welcome. My plan is to go all the way out and back, but there’s a possibility I’d turn around before the last descent before 211 if time is tight or I’m feeling my real 53 instead of my pretend 35.

I’ll be there. I don’t mind getting wet, but my descending skills in the rain are questionable, so I’ll be going more slowly than I’d hoped.

So I’ll be a bit of a contrarian here. Having ridden Skyline Drive enough, I certainly wouldn’t do it if it was crowded with cars (like when fall leaves are at peak color). But I’m not sure if I’d ride it if it was totally closed off to cars and instead jammed with cyclists and pedestrians. Honestly, it could be a total shit show (pardon my Francais). I’m trying to imagine having to thread your way around slower climbers. And if you like to bomb down descents, maneuvering around lots of riders with less stellar descending skills would be scarier than cars. Instead of “on your left” like on the bike trail, it would be “hold your line.” And I’m trying to imagine how many people who are doing this ride because they think it’s “safe” would know what that means and what to do.

I hope everyone who does this has a fun and safe time. Personally, I’ll pass.

It’s probably best to treat it like Bike To Work Day instead of your local shop’s weekly Peloton.

I probably won’t make the call until Sunday morning. If it’s a washout, I may ditch. Other than that, I have to decide which bike to use. Lightweight carbon road bike, or lower-geared gravel bike with fenders?

I had been discussing with Mr. Lumberjack which bikes we’d be using, and we said that rain or shine, it was the nice bike. Now that I have Spyre disc brakes on my rain bike, I’ve changed my mind and am going with the rain bike. There’s nothing like being able to stop in the rain.

It looks like maybe really light rain, but I’m probably going with the rain bike. The challenge is going to be how to dress for the temps and wet combined with altitude and the heat up from climbing and the cool down from descending. I have a feeling I will be zipping and unzipping stuff all day.

I’ll be looking for Steve O and his collection of vintage “Car Free Shenandoah Day” t-shirts then.

Have fun y’all!! I have to work this weekend so I won’t be able to make it out there. I still haven’t ridden SLD yet! Humbug. If someone could post some pictures please. I’m curious as to what it will look like with bikes everywhere.

I’m also curious to see any data showing lots more hotel stays, meals eaten, and drinks drunk in the adjacent towns because cyclists took over for a weekend.

So rain now pretty much out of the forecast. Guess I’ll plan to take the road bike.

I’m also going to take the road bike after I spend the rest of the night figuring out what to wear for the cold temperature.

I’m in; looking forward to this! I’ll be on a road bike, 23mm slicks with rim brakes, so will take all the descents very carefully if the road hasn’t dried out by then :D

FWIW, chances of rain lingering tomorrow are somewhat higher on Skyline Drive than they are in DC. But it looks promising that we might get much more pleasant conditions than previously expected.

Yeah, I may have to stop near each crest and nadir to add or remove a layer. These will be the longest hills I’ve ever attempted to ride. Not especially steep anywhere AFAICT (and presumably no challenge for RV engines or brakes), but long.
