The State Highway Department milled the road I take for a couple of miles in the morning, and haven’t repaved it yet. The resulting loose gravel surface gashed the sidewall on a practically new Continental 4000S and resulted in one blowout. I booted to get to work, then installed a patch on the inside of the sidewall. I can see it’s starting to bulge out and is certain to fail at some point. Is there anything else I can do to save this tire?

With a sidewall gash, would you want to? I know they’re new, but at some point, peace of mind is easy to purchase. I’ve patched this kind of thing temporarily with a dollar bill or a tube patch, but I wouldn’t want to have to worry about it long term.

Well, I figured that was probably the case, I just thought someone might have a really cool fix. Maybe I’ll do some rad drifting with it before this weekend.

It can be done and perhaps folks here have had some success with stitching, patching, and gluing; my comment probably reflects more on me and my caution/inclination to replace something rather than have to worry about it.

Okay, I rebooted, and it’s still failing. I have renewed appreciation for the strength of sidewalls at withstanding high pressures.
