I recall that in the last shutdown you still worked because your department had a different funding source. But I presume you’re no longer with that department. Have fun biking around in The Kyiv. By the way, the Holodomor memorial is nearly done here – can’t wait to see people sitting and eating food in a memorial to a famine from all the food trucks next to it.

If there is a shutdown and you’ll be off work, where do you plan to ride? I know last time there was talk about closing the C&O, but that did not happen, so I am planning to ride it, and the Gap, to Pittsburgh finally. Will camp some nights (North Fork, Ohiopyle, Cedar Creek) but plan a second night stay in Frosburg at the Trail Inn.
Any one else got plans? Or am I being too hopeful and premature?
The C&O was technically closed during the last shutdown…all port-a-pottys were closed with steel bands (other than a couple the locals had cut open north of Hancock), and the well heads had their handles removed. You could still use a bit of muscle to get the pumps to work, but a few were very tough to get flowing…really a two person job. There were also the occasional ranger, but one could maneuver around where the were patrolling/wait till dark.
That being said, I don’t think there will be a shutdown.

ParticipantI would not suggest riding to a nice national park and trying to sneak in unless you’re okay with just riding there and then straight back. I tried that at Muir Woods since I was in SF for work. The ride wasn’t that bad out there and it was particularly beautiful on the descent toward Muir Woods, but the Ranger was a total punk who wouldn’t even let me wait by the entrance for two seconds and instead yelled at me to keep moving right in front of some tourists trying to back out. But would I ride out to it again? Hell yah. That descent was worth the whole ride.

ParticipantWe need to have an honest-to-goodness Gravelly Point Crit this time. It would have to be a little outlaw, but the USPP weren’t patrolling the park at all last time.

ParticipantI think I’ll be “essential” and therefore still have to come to work. I had to last time. Frickin sucks working while you know all the idiots in congress hate your guts. Here’s to changed rules and maybe some actual time off if there’s another congress-can’t-do-their-job-so-the-rest-of-us-suffer government shutdown.

Hey, I’m just hoping my pension check doesn’t bounce. We went to the Holodomor memorial here a couple of weeks ago. No food trucks.

ParticipantFirst day or two I’ll be working to finalize FY 15 EOY and ensure 16 is shut down correctly, but after that I’ll be free (and broke). I’ll probably try to do an unsupported century ride on the w&od (Alexandria to wherever 50 miles out and 50 miles back takes me). I think I’ve mapped out enough rest stops at this point to pull it off. The weather this time of year is amazing for long rides.
I hope there isn’t a shutdown though, or if there is one, it’s short. I have ALOT of wedding bills to pay off in the next month or two…

So I’m guessing the plane fare to Kyiv isn’t in your current budget? Maybe Bike Arlington or WABA could look into chartering a flight for all the furloughed feds?
The W&OD century from Alexandria is basically all the way out to Purcellville and back depended on you starting point (89 miles actually on the trail from Shirlington).

Reading this makes me worry, lack of water and pooping choices would be a bad damper on such a trip.
Might just drive up to PA and camp in a State Park and ride in their State Forests.

Because riding in circles in an empty parking lot is oh so dangerous…

Please check my post for a recent edit. However, please tell me when that parking lot is empty? I have ridden by it in just about every hour of the the day and there is always been people there. Between plane watchers, boat launch users, trail users, and bathroom using cab drivers, it seems always busy.

It’s not that bad, just requires some extra planning! And maybe some extra water.

Didn’t they close the gates during the last shutdown?
