ParticipantAt the risk of competing with you for some of these jobs, this is one place that I keep an eye on for Energy vacancies:

-Only semi-serious about the competing part – I don’t have the Engineering Creds. but I do have a Science and Technology Policy Degree and have spent the last 6 years in Energy…. That said, I’m really only looking for full-time opportunities.

Sorry about the current looming situation. Did you ever think of the career switchers program for teaching. Schools are always looking for people strong in science and math. There is a number of ex-military guys working in Arlington county who took advantage of the program. One of our best physics teachers was an Air Force fighter pilot. Heck, we even had an astronaut.
Big plus: plenty of time for family and biking!

ParticipantHaving been through this before, gents BE CAREFUL. Make sure you consult with your ethics office, particularly where your outside employment would be within your professional field.
On a positive note, you have to go pretty far back in the history of the fed govt to find actual unpaid furloughs (I was part of the Fed Govt work force in the 1990s when the Clinton/Gincrich stand off occurred, and we received pay for our time off when all was said and done). I think it was in the 1930s, my Gpa was army and got furloughed for two weeks. He hitched a free ride on a military transport with Gma and headed for China. And, well, let’s just say….. they came back with my dad!

Yep, pretty much anything in my field is out. Maybe I should just see which bike shops in the area need a hand. An employee discount may be nice.

CaBi is usually looking for help – the bikeshare starts in Chicago and other citys are hiring really heavily too.

ParticipantAn executive branch employee may not engage in outside employment or any other outside activity that conflicts with the employee’s official duties. Under Subpart H of 5 C.F.R. part 2635, an outside activity conflicts with an employee’s official duties if the activity:
Is prohibited by statute or by an agency supplemental regulation;
or
Requires the employee’s disqualification from Government work that is central or critical to the performance of the employee’s Government duties. In addition, an employee must comply with provisions in Subpart H governing specific outside activities. Moreover, an employee must ensure compliance with other subparts in 5 C.F.R. part 2635 and with other legal authorities.
In order to prevent a possible conflict of interest or ensure compliance with a provision, it may be necessary for an employee to avoid, modify, or terminate an outside activity or affiliation. Employees are encouraged to seek advice from an agency ethics official if there is a reasonable possibility that an outside activity or affiliation may conflict with the employee’s official duties or violate a law or regulation. Employees of some agencies may be required by an agency supplemental regulation to obtain prior approval before engaging in specified outside activities.
An executive branch employee may wish to engage in outside employment or activities while employed by the Government. The public may suspect that the employee will take Government actions to favor the employee’s outside employer or other outside interests, or that the employee will use access to Government information, property, or decisionmakers to further those interests. Also, the public may be concerned that outside activities will prevent the employee from spending sufficient time on the employee’s Government work. Accordingly:
An employee may be required to seek approval before engaging in an outside activity.
An employee may be disqualified from working on a particular Government matter while engaged in an outside activity.
An employee may be prohibited from accepting compensation for an activity.
An employee may be prohibited from engaging in an outside activity.Outside Employment Limitations
An executive branch employee may not engage in outside employment or any other outside activity that conflicts with the employee’s official duties or that would violate a law or regulation, and may be required to obtain approval before engaging in specified outside activities.
In the 1990s, I wrote a law review article. Not sure what I will do this time. It may be a good time to work on certifications or other career advancing moves.
I believe Fed Law says that they have to give you 30 days notice before they implement a Furlough – so you will have some time if it happens.

ParticipantI was allowed to work evenings as a high school soccer ref in Georgia. Can’t do that nowadays ’cause it’s too tough to run around. The other easy gig would be dealing with immigration issues, but that would really be a conflict of interest with my current federal service.

When/where were you a soccer ref? My high school in Southeast GA was big in soccer — had a lot of state championships in the 80’s — although nowhere near as big as some of those Atlanta schools.

ParticipantThe worst thing from my perspective will be that we won’t be able to take our unpaid furlough days as we want them. My wife and I have been wanting to go to India for a few years now, but we can never bank enough leave. Forcing us to take 1day/week leave w/out pay does not help the vacation potential. It’s such a waste of time! If they’re going to screw us, I wish they’d allow us to choose when we get screwed. I also work for the Navy but as a physical scientist in the atmospheric field.

I was in the Atlanta area for 1987. Also did one match over towards the Alabama border – they used the two ref system, and the other guy didn’t show up. It was a good thing I had a lot of experience from Indiana as the ref in the center.
