There’s still construction going on.
jfel,
I go this way every day on my commute and the trail is difficult to find once you connect to Rotary Road unless you know it’s there. Basically, where the road starts to turn right, you want to hang a left on to the sidewalk like you’re going to the 9/11 Memorial. It feels weird to do, because of the bad pavement there and the feeling like you’re about to salmon into oncoming traffic. (You’re not really, but it feels that way.)
If you’d like, I’d be happy to ride in with you any morning this week or on the weekend if you want to test ride beforehand. I’m in the Penrose area and could meet you there. I’ll probably also try to con you into going coffee club though.
Here’s my ride in this morning if looking at the map helps:

I was thinking of riding in on Thursday or Friday since the forecast is looking cooler and meeting up with a fellow biker could be the push that makes this a reality! What time do you usually head out?

You’ve gotten great advice, I’ll just add:
1) Hopefully you can ride it home today — it’s much easier to find coming from DC, just remember stay right when you come to the fork where the left fork looks shiny and new and the right fork looks old and craggy and overgrown. Then you can see it for yourself.2) Sorry you had to back track so far. Another option, once you’re in the Pentagon parking lot, is to keep heading east through the parking lot to Connector Road, which you take north. From there turn left on Boundary Channel Drive, and right into the LBJ parking lot then onto the wooden bridge over the water to the actual LBJ memorial grove (betcha didn’t know he had a memorial). From there, stay straight/right at the fork so you head to the parking lot (not the statue of LBJ). Straight through the parking lot and a little jog left then right will put you on a trail under the Humpback Bridge to the Seagull Statue (Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial) which connects to the Mt Vernon Trail. You can head southeast to the 14th St Bridge or northwest to the Memorial Bridge. Here’s the route in google.
3) I’d recommend trying the through-Rosslyn route. You may find it more pleasant. Would definitely love to hear what you think of all the options and where you settle.
4) Totally fine that you posted here, but for these sorts of things, we normally start a new post. We often start new posts. Except when (1) we see a friend (One-Eighth Sighting); (2) something interesting happens in the morning (My Morning Commute); (3) something interesting happens in the evening (My Evening Commute); (4) we see a sale (Saw This Deal, Thought Someone Might Like It); (5) we see/are part of a near miss (Missed Connection); (6) when we take ride pictures (Post your ride pics) [Did I miss anything?]
Thank you for the information. Re: posting, this is very useful.
I’ll let you know how it turns out, happy to have so many options!

Sending you a PM. It’s always helpful to have a little push to start the commute. I thought about bike commuting for over two years before I started riding in to try to impress a girl that was also a bike commuter.

When we have a positive interaction with another road/trail user (Found Connection).

ParticipantFor my Columbia Pike peeps: Millimg work was occurring on the Pike tonight between the Pentagon and Southgate Dr. They were making quick progress when I passed at 9 but the road may still be milled tomorrow. Consider taking the trail instead. Happy to see this very rough pavement getting fixed.

Also when we’ve bought something nifty (Your latest bike purchase?) or built something nifty (Your latest bike project?).

ParticipantNoticed the new bike lane on Chesterbrook this morning (on my moto, ironically). For those that know the area, guesses on where it starts and stops?
*edit* Chesterbrook, not Old Chesterbrook

Westmoreland to Longfellow? That is, the only wide part of the road.

Haha, whoops…I meant just “Chesterbrook” not “Old Chesterbrook.”

Then I’m going to guess Glebe to 41st. The straight, flat, and wide part with the best sight lines.

Coincidentally, the part that is in Arlington County and not Fairfax County.

Yep! Now the difference in the same road crossing from Arlington into Fairfax is that much more pronounced; the bike lane ends, the sidewalk ends, the lots almost double in size…oh, and the street signs turn blue!

ParticipantWhat’s going on with Army Navy Drive? The bike lanes (all except a small segment near the underpass to the country club) disappeared awhile ago when the stripes were ground away. Just this week the surface was chip-sealed.
Are the bike lanes coming back?

I noticed that too… About six months ago, they also decided to extend a bus stop right through the middle of the bike lane, just after the big hill, going southbound. Guess they don’t want bike lanes there.

Yes, back in May they did that. I have been waiting for the return of the bike lane as was describe by Bike-Ped Manager:
http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?11745-Army-Navy-Drive-losing-a-bit-of-the-bike-lane&p=158016#post158016I hope it is soon. At least the ground down lane marker was still a marker, now there is none. It felt like the cars were already closer to me and it was the first time after the chip-seal! Also, with darker commuting, it is really necessary to have clear markings.
