ParticipantHot and steamy. All trails. All of ’em!

ParticipantCrews were doing some utility work on the huge transmission line at Walter Reed/W&OD, blocking half the trail on the west side. Not sure if it’s going to be done today, but it could make for some missed or not-so-missed connections during commuting hours.

ParticipantThe construction that closed off part of Four Mile Run trail near Long Branch in Glencarlyn Park has been completed, and that stretch of trail is open again. Looks like new pavement, too.

ParticipantAnybody know if the paving work is finished on USGS Drive in Reston between Sunrise Valley Dr and Pinecrest Rd? It was all torn up about 10 days ago.

ParticipantSeveral bucket trucks on W&OD at Shreve this morning. Looks like they were working on the neighborhood line, not the high line, so may be gone already. If not, may be exciting during rush hour.

ParticipantTrail construction along south side of Arlington Blvd, between Pershing and Rhodes is complete.

ParticipantTrollheim is VERY slick. Many cyclists have reported wiping out. Saw an ELITE rider this morning go down.

It was super slick this morning. There was an ambulance in the TRI lot when I went through, and I encountered the paramedics wheeling a guy out on a stretcher as I hit the wood – I don’t know if the guy was a cyclist or not. I almost lost control braking for them, and the medics were slipping and sliding in their boots. Immediately after, I saw at least one cyclist down, though he fortunately appeared uninjured.
That stretch is gonna get the Park Department sued one of these days.

ParticipantThe EB lanes of the PA cycletrack are milled at 2 intersections — I’m going to guess 13th and 11th. (well, the intersection is milled extending into the EB cycletrack lanes). I saw the milling last Thursday, so I’m guessing it’s been that way for a while. Ugh.

Since 8/28 (which, you’re right, is last Thursday) as far as I can tell:

ParticipantI’m really torn about my new route to work after both moving and having the kids’ school move. I don’t use PA Ave at all most days. On one hand, I like to use good bike infrastructure, especially somewhat controversial infrastructure, to show that cyclists do indeed use what you build for us. On the other hand, [expletive deleted] PA Ave and the stubborn refusal to fix the easily fixable problems.

I wonder if the Park Service has considered replacing the wooden boardwalks on the MVT with the material used on the new Anacostia River Trail ped/bike bridge over the railroad tracks (north side); I’ve never seen anything like it before. It seems like it is a combination of wood and concrete and has a lot of texture. I haven’t tried it in the rain though but presumably the designers gave some thought to traction issues since there is a long slope up and down the overpass. The material does not seem particularly heavy either which would make it a good candidate for replacing on the trollheim. On the other hand, the bridge is practically brand new so who knows how long the surface material will hold up.

Whatever that material is, we rode it on the GAP trail near Pittsburgh too. Good stuff.

It’s weird isn’t it? Seems quite effective though.
