I once saw a man on a Segway tour down Bourbon Street in New Orleans with a little lap dog strapped to his chest in what looked more or less like a Baby Bjorn. I’m pretty sure the man was wearing Crocs, but I can’t swear to it.

All Segway riders I’ve seen since then have been judged against this man and found lacking.

I’m stealing this. Hope you don’t mind. :D

As far as Segways, what is amazing about them is their transformative quality. If you watch the process of a man putting on greasepaint, a wig, a big red nose, huge shoes and motley clothing, your mind accepts the concept that this man has become a clown. Once a person steps onto a segway they go from a normal person into an imbecile in an instantaneous transformation that is quite mystifying to the mind.

Don’t mind at all. It’s actually true (although I really can’t remember about the Crocs. I might have made that up and then forgot it was made up because it’s too awesome).

I particularly like the people who wear exercise clothing while riding on these things. WHEW! Just broke a sweat…um…leaning.

It was a good catch. As it turns out, Segways are not permitted on the trail.

From the NPS web site http://www.nps.gov/gwmp/planyourvisit/mtvernontrail.htm

Motorized vehicles, including skateboards, bicycles, scooters, and Segways are not allowed on the Mount Vernon Trail. Persons with disabilities may use motorized wheelchairs on the trail.

But you CAN use Segways on the CCT, which sounds pretty darn entertaining.

The trail is multi-use in various sections. Pedestrians, joggers, bikers, skaters and equestrians share different parts of the trail. Some of the trail sections will not be appropriate for some uses. For example, much of the Difficult Run portion of the trail will not be surfaced and is frequently muddy, with steep slopes and narrow passages. Many parts of the Accotink Stream Valley portion of the trail are paved and not appropriate for equestrian use. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on any part of the trail. The exception is for Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (Segways and similar devices).

So where can we rent a bunch of these things? :D
