A couple of things. It’s the worst kind of road design for cycling, one lane in each direction with no parking lane and no shoulder, and while traffic does not go at high speed on it, it’s a very consistent 30 mph for cars. Second, it’s got a lot of short, steep hills with lights at both top and bottom that make it nearly impossible for a cyclist to maintain momentum. You’re constantly aware of holding up a line of cars (and I’m fairly immune to that feeling, so . . . ). As a result, I see maybe one cyclist on it every month or so. It gets better north of Nebraska, but that’s well past Van Ness.
Finally, the parallel routes of Wisconsin and Connecticut are simply better, so few see the need to ride on this road.
