There’s a marker on the map of proposed Arlington stations for Cherrydale, at N. Quincy and 20th St.:

That’s not a guarantee that Cherrydale will get a station. But it does indicate that the location is under consideration. There are neighborhood CaBi meetings this fall, to gather local input on station locations. The thread includes a list of meeting locations. There’s a meeting on Nov. 14 at the Cherrydale Fire Dept.

You might be a few months late in proposing multiple locations, but as PotomacCyclist mentioned, you can attend your local Civic Association meeting, (Cherrydale – 11/14/12 @ 7:30pm @ Cherrydale Fire Dept., 3900 Lee Hwy.) to give further input, or you can email your support to info@bikealrington.com. The new expansion will also be discussed at the November BAC meeting.

As for Lyon Village, their are property ownership issues so the location is being re-examined including staking the property line to better see how a station would fit in along the trail.

Oh please oh please oh please DO NOT PUT A CABI at the bottom of the cork screw. That spot along the Custis is already bad enough. We really dont need idiots staring blindly at the CABI station, trying to figure out how it works, and trying to mount bikes there. That is a tough curve with obstructed lines of sight.

Thanks, Tim. I followed the CaBi expansion discussion, and I thought the upshot was the Cherrydale was out of luck in this round. Glad I’m wrong.

Hopefully, Arlington will realize they own more space in that area, and will be able to improve the curb cut from the crosswalk (with the light for traffic coming off of I 66 W) up to the trail. If a letter writing campaign to the owners of the shopping center would help, let us know.

We’ve gotten a number of offers to “rally the troops” so we’ll let you know if we need a public campaign with pitchforks!

I sent in an absurdly long email with feedback on the 2013 expansion (and encourage everyone to do the same); here’s my spiel on this particular station on the off chance it gets someone else’s wheels turning (so to speak):

I understand the desire to put this right on Quincy bike lanes, but I’m afraid it puts it too far from anyplace anyone would want to go. 20th and Pollard are both fairly quiet residential streets – perhaps putting it at the Lee & Pollard intersection on the south side of Lee. Then you’re a much quicker post-dock walk to the strip centers in the area, the retail at the Bromptons and smack on top of any private event that has rented out the fire hall.

I’m not familiar with that area, other than what I saw on the Google Map. I’ve only ridden around there a couple times. So I won’t be posting any feedback on the Cherrydale location. I’ve sent a lot of feedback on other areas that I’m more familiar with, in Arlington as well as in D.C. and Maryland.

I live all of a block from the proposed location. I agree that in a perfect world, having the station on Lee would be better. But the South side of Lee doesn’t get the necessary light in the winter for the solar-powered stations. The South side of the Lee & Pollard intersection is already horribly crowded — there’s just no space there for a station. There would seem to be space on the North side of Lee, but from the discussion on the neighborhood listserv, it seems that not enough of that space is public land. Quincy & 20th isn’t ideal, but it isn’t a bad alternative.

Maybe the redesign of Five Points (Lee/Old Dominion/Quincy/Military) will free up some space, or maybe there’s enough publicly owned space on the North side of Lee between Quebec and Pollard (in front of Pasha’s).

For those not familiar with that strip, there are 2 car dealerships/servicers, a yoga studio, 3 great restaurants and a hardware store — all of which are “destination worthy”, even coming from the R-B corridor (imagine being able to take your car in for service and jumping on a CaBi back to Metro/home; or Cabi-ing from your apartment in Clarendon to a real hardware store). There is also a grocery store, some other restaurants, gas stations, 7-11, etc and whatever is going to fill the Bromptons and Dominion Heights developments. (I didn’t realize how great the mix of retail is until we moved, so I couldn’t comment during the actual comment period. Good point about still being able to submit opinions).

I have taken our car in for service at Koons and walked about a mile to the CaBi station at the main Arlington Library (just missing an ART bus, because I wasn’t familiar with their routes). So I can state personally how great it would be to have a station anywhere in Cherrydale, whether right off of Lee or in the proposed site.
