    Hi everyone,
Here are the details for the Freezing Saddles Welcome Happy Hour, the event at which we meet our teammates and make plans for a sensational 2018 season!

    Date: Wednesday, January 10, 2018.
Time: 6 pm onwards. We will plan on a short welcome presentation at about 7 pm. We’ve reserved the space until midnight.
Location: Bier Baron Tavern, located at 1523 22nd St NW, Washington, DC (between P and Q Streets on the east side of the street)…this is near Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom in DC. The room has audio-visual capacity including a screen, a juke box, a sound system (we can hook up an iphone or other gadgets), projector, etc.
Cover charge (suggested cash donation): $10 per person…all of this will cover food, as Bier Baron has waived its normal rental fees. They will card us at the front door, where we’ll show our IDs (it’s a tavern) and pay the $10 for food.
Food: We’ve asked the venue to stagger the food in batches rather than putting it all out at 6 pm. The buffet of finger food will include soft pretzels, quesadillas, and falafel sandwiches.
Beer: Bier Baron sells 24 beers on draft, and up ‘til 7 pm there’s a $1 discount on the draft beers (the standard price is $5 to $9 for most types). They also sell 600 types of beer in bottles, and they have sodas and juices as well. There’s a full menu of dinner food for those who wish a heartier meal.
Children: If you’re not able to park your little ones with a friend or a babysitter, you can bring them along….kids are welcome until 9 pm.
Bike Parking: Bring a U-lock and any other locks you’ve got, ‘cause we will be parking our bikes on the street. Do not park INSIDE the neighbor’s garden – please keep your bicycle on the outer part of the railing if you lock up to any private enclosures. Last winter we did an extensive search for bike parking facilities in the area, but without much luck. However, there are 15 racks between Bier Baron and Dupont Circle, which will hold about 70 bikes, plus assorted poles and other things to latch onto. There is also Capital Bikeshare, assuming you can find a space in which to dock your bike, and now there are multiple brands of dock-less bikes as well. Bier Baron is located near the Dupont Circle Metro, if you opt to take transit instead. If you’ve got a folding bike or a bicycle of the sort that would leave the rest of us drooling, or if you forget to bring your lock, the Bier Baron has graciously offered for you to bring your bicycle into the bar. There is only limited space so please send me a PM (private message) in advance, if possible.
RSVPs: We are making a list of likely attendees so as to generate an approximate head count for food.
Please reply on this thread if you’d like to join in the fun (and please indicate the number if you’ll be bringing friends/family). All are welcome.

    Looking forward.
w&w on behalf of your hardworking FS social committee

Anyone interested in a convoy from College Park (here’s looking at you Greenbelt)?

I’ll probably be at work so will just ride over from Union Station. But happy to lead the convoy home…

I’m in. Excited to find out the team announcements and figure out if anyone else I saw riding into work today is on my team.

Can this be mandatory reading for happy hour? Sorry to my mid-atlantic and southern friends for constantly saying “it’s not that bad outside.”

Dear Northerners: We get that this weather is no big deal for you. Now please shut up.

Southern Californian here. But it isn’t that bad outside. Certainly not so bad that public schools should have cancelled classes before dinner last night.

I just realized I won’t be starting my trek to Bier Baron from my normal location, so I’m a little unsure of which route I should take. I’ll be starting up in Sandy Spring venturing south. I have planned the following route, basically taking Layhill down to Sligo Creek (once I hit Sligo, I know where I’m going). For those that are familiar with the area, do you have any comments or suggestions? A complete change up of routes? I’ve also thought about Layhill to Mathew Henson to CCT and onwards. Or is there a direct route south I should consider?

Edit: This alternative through Takoma Park has been suggested to me by friends

Hi all – Looks like we have 61 responses to date. That includes some spouses and significant others as well as non-competing “Friends.” So less than a quarter of the 241 Freezing Saddles riders have RSVPed.
Shall I tell the venue to prepare food for 61, or are others planning to participate?

There is no deadline for RSVPing, but at the same time, it’s really helpful to know if you think you will be there.
Please join in the festivities if you can. Freezing Saddles is far more fun if you’ve met your teammates in person!
    Thanks,
    w&w

You might want to check your records from last year. For what it’s worth, I think we’ve had about 100 at each of the past several, but far fewer than that have sent RSVPs. As one who has been working with registrations, and found many that had failed to follow the instructions, I wouldn’t count on RSVPs bearing much relationship to actual attendance.
