    Hi everyone,
Please join us for the Freezing Saddles Welcome Happy Hour on Thursday evening 10 January 2019. If you’re participating in Freezing Saddles, this is your chance to meet your teammates. If you’re not signing up for the competition, please join us for the celebration anyway — come see your friends and make some new ones! All wintertime riders are welcome (plus family and friends).

    Date: Thursday, January 10, 2019
Time: 6 pm onwards. We will plan on a short welcome presentation at about 7 pm. We’ve reserved the space until midnight.
Location: Bier Baron Tavern, located at 1523 22nd St NW, Washington, DC (between P and Q Streets on the east side of the street)…this is near Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom in DC.
Cover charge (suggested cash donation): $10 per person…all of this will cover food, as Bier Baron has waived its normal rental fees. They will card us at the front door, where we’ll show our IDs (it’s a tavern) and pay the $10 for food.
Food: We’ve asked the venue to stagger the food in batches rather than putting it all out at 6 pm. The buffet of finger food will include soft pretzels, quesadillas, and falafel sandwiches.
Beer: Bier Baron sells 24 beers on draft plus 600 types of beer in bottles, and they have sodas and juices as well. There’s a full menu of dinner food for those who wish a heartier meal.
Children: If you’re not able to park your little ones with a friend or a babysitter, you can bring them along….kids are welcome until 9 pm.
Bike Parking: Bring a U-lock and any other locks you’ve got, ‘cause we will be parking our bikes on the street. Do not park INSIDE the neighbor’s garden – please keep your bicycle on the outer part of the railing if you lock up to any private enclosures. Two winters ago we did an extensive search for bike parking facilities in the area, but without much luck. However, there are 15 racks between Bier Baron and Dupont Circle, which will hold about 70 bikes, plus assorted poles and other things to latch onto. There is also Capital Bikeshare, assuming you can find a space in which to dock your bike, and there are dock-less bikes as well. Bier Baron is located near the Dupont Circle Metro, if you opt to take transit instead. If you’ve got a folding bike or a bicycle that rivals the cost of a diamond ring, or if you forget to bring your lock, the Bier Baron has graciously offered for you to bring your bicycle into the bar. There is only limited space so please send me a PM (private message) in advance, if possible.
RSVPs: We are making a list of likely attendees so as to generate an approximate head count for food.
Please reply on this thread if you’d like to join in the fun (and please indicate the number if you’ll be bringing friends/family). All are welcome.

    Looking forward.

I think it will need to be deployed fairly strategically. But this is the new rickroll:

Thanks for all the RSVPs—keep ‘em coming. We have 99 people signed up thus far. The weather report looks favorable. Temperatures will be chilly (around freezing) but I am delighted to report that there is a zero percent chance of precipitation – no blizzard this time!

Please reply on this thread if you’d like to join in the fun. It’s fine to show up if you’ve not RSVPed, but it’s super-helpful to have a head-count in advance so nobody goes hungry. All are welcome.

Not signed up for Freezing Saddles? Not a problem! This celebration is for all wintertime riders, regardless of whether you’re on a team – the more the merrier.

    See you on Thursday! w&w

I’ve got a competing work engagement that night, but will be looking forward to team assignments (and may even hoist one if I don’t get home too late).
