ParticipantWhat? We’re talking about cancelling/postponing a Freezing Saddles event because of SNOW?

ParticipantIts all my fault. I neglected to give HOZN the list of codes of Strava segments for my challenge, and have not made it to a bookstore to get the prize. I was beginning to panic. And you know “we” control the climate, right? Sometimes just by willing it, you know?
But thanks to W&W for the hard work (more responsible than mine) and I am okay however it is decided.

ParticipantArg. If it snows much at all I will have to beg out. Part of my job is managing snow cleanup for a large site. Snow means I will be working rather than ridin’ laughin’ and having a beer or two.
I still need to get the 1/1/18 ingot to Josh A.

ParticipantHi all. I just heard back from the venue, Bier Baron. They say that as of right now they are planning to be open tomorrow. This could change, depending on conditions.
If we would like to change the date, they can offer us Monday April 9 as a replacement date. That’s the only available day they have in April.
Thoughts?
I’ll be offline for the next couple of hours, but will check back later on. And we can keep monitoring the weather forecast. My impression is it’s not getting any better.March 20, 2018 at 8:41 pm #1085849Emm

My impression is it’s not getting any better.I’ll make any date work, although I really do prefer rescheduling if it gets bad tomorrow. Although I know some people on here will make it to Bier Baron regardless because they live near plowed trails or in the city, I’m not sure asking everyone to head out in 4-8 inches of snow (or more if NBC is to be trusted) is safe when not all trails or roads will be clear. I think you’ll get a really light crowd, and it wont be the same fun closing happy hour as it has been in the past.
Who knows, maybe it’ll just be rain tomorrow though. They’ve missed the mark plenty of times before, so a wait and see approach isn’t a bad idea.

ParticipantIt’s still not supposed to drop below freezing in DC until JUST before rush hour Thursday morning, and even then not for long. So prepare for the worst, but MY prediction is it’s going to be mostly wet. Of course, the hours of rain before anything that might freeze means no pre-treatment of anything, so keep the studded tires handy.

ParticipantMonday April 9 is workable!

ParticipantI don’t know whether there is a timeframe after which we can’t cancel tomorrow, but I suspect that if the weather truly is THE WORST STORM OF ALL TIME!!!, pretty much everything will be cancelled. That makes the question one of whether the Bier Baron needs to be booked now for April 9th, or weather (pun intentional) it can wait until tomorrow.
Call me crazy, but I’m thinking April 9th is not a high demand day…

ParticipantI’m certainly good with April 9th, also.
Metro has already implemented a moderate snow plan for bus service tomorrow. And that is most likely to be a best case scenario.
They’re talking 8-14″ now for parts of MoCo (where I am).
The above post brings up a good point for “that final moment where things can be cancelled”. I know some diehards will still show up, but that’s not really an option for us folks in the burbs.

ParticipantI feel the call should be made in the AM, by which point it should be more certain as to how significant a snowfall this will be.
Freezing Saddles is not just for the DC residents and a handful of badasses. We should hold the happy hour when people when people who live in the ‘burbs and/or don’t own studded tires can safely make it there and home.
I agree with SteveO that the aforementioned badasses should feel free to gather at Bier Baron tomorrow even if the HH is postponed. Further, I encourage SteveO to devise an alternate scoring system that takes into account how many final happy hours you attended

ParticipantBier Baron has been great about working with us. They understand the transportation challenges and safety concerns. So it’s okay if we keep mulling this over and monitoring the weather ‘til morning. We can let them know as soon as we’ve decided.
When I was riding earlier this afternoon it was somewhat unpleasant – the sleet felt like little daggers in my eyes and cheeks – but coming home a few minutes ago it was practically balmy out there, and I started getting my hopes up again for tomorrow!
Somehow we’ll need to get the word out to people ASAP once we know what the xxxx we’re doing. Perhaps someone could do an email blast and a Strava announcement…
Any more thoughts on Monday, April 9 as a plan B?
I’ve been lining up carpool coverage for the kids, just in case.Warm regards,

Ha! Do you know what we’d call a day like tomorrow where I come from???
Wednesday. Eight to 14″ is hardly a snowfall in The Great White North…
Seriously though, I get it. I’m in Silver Spring, and one of the reasons I bike to work is that the Metro is a pathetic means of transportation, under the best of conditions. When the weather is bad (or at least, sort of bad), Metro is horrid.
So I’m easy, either way…

I’ve just set things up so you can do a blast e-mail to all the Freezing Saddles participants, and sent you a PM with the details.
