Here’s the route I take, which is partially the way you’ve been going, but with less time on Cedar by using Sandburg and Cottage and more time on the Accotink trail. The trail is actually really interesting in that part–deep in the woods, it feels like you are far away from civilization.
At Cedar and Rte 50, turn just before 50 on the frontage road. You can cut all the way over to Barkley and then use the light to cross 50.
The sidepath is a good choice on the first uphill part of Old Lee Highway after leaving the trail, but after that, there’s plenty of room IMO. If you take a good piece of the lane, the cars have no trouble going around because of the very wide painted median area. I’ve never felt crowded along there.
Also, I almost always try to avoid crossing highways at interchanges, so I would avoid Nutley at 66. dcv’s option takes you under 66 on Vaden–much preferred over Nutley.
Good luck!

Greetings!
I have friends who live near Fairfax High School on Rebel Run. The way I have got to that location (one time) on my bicycle is by taking the W&OD trail to Cedar Lane and then taking Cedar Lane to Old Lee Highway to Rebel run.
Cedar lane and Old Lee Highway are not really bike friendly and I have had to rely on sidewalks when available to avoid disgruntled motorists. I could probably also take Tapawingo to Nutley St to the Accotink trail (per Google maps) but I’m not sure if Nutley street is bike friendly too. Any advice and suggestions on how best I can navigate this route would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
