I must have passed more than a dozen mouse/etc carcasses between herndon and leesburg this morning on the W&OD. Maybe cold related? I only got about 1/4 mile from the house this morning before I turned around and came back for a long sleeve jersey. My feet still froze; I don’t think it had quite reached 60 degrees. I’m not ready for this weather yet. And then at one point I came up behind this guy who seemingly bathed in axe body spray–there was a miasma that almost knocked me off my bike. I don’t think he was anywhere near the rodents, though, so that’s still unexplained.

I decided not to post this in “pics from my ride”.

Was out later on in the morning with the fam. Can definitely confirm mouse carnage. Caterpillars too.

Seeing the carnage on the way back from Purcelleville, I couldn’t help wonder if the recent clearing and cutting back of the foliage around the W&OD might have also included some sort of chemical spray that caused the moles and such to vacate the underbrush?

Perhaps it is the dastardly work of Glenn Carlyn the trail kitty.

I watched a hawk grab a mouse this afternoon on my way home, here’s the video. full screen you may be able to see it better, it was really cool to watch it happen! I’ve seen this happen a couple of times, but never caught it on video.

I’ve seen a few random dead mice on MVT and 4MR recently, enough for me to notice that there seem to be more than I remember ever seeing before. Maybe just coincidence, maybe time of year, maybe something else. Who knows? Haven’t seen a raptor fly off with one yet, though. Awesome video.

BTW are those PB Cascadia 26″ ATB fenders? They look familiar. :)
