I’m planning on using the W&OD out to West Falls Church tonight – think it’ll be melted enough by then for smooth tires?

Thanks for the help W&OD riders!!

ah, those crazy people with the goggles and big boots. seems fairly aspirational on that trail. :-)

No googles for me and my cross-country ski boots aren’t much more than my winter cycling boots. But I fully agree with you on the “aspirational” aspect. :D My old waxless skis are useless in really wet snow. I enjoy using them on the W&OD and 4MRT when there’s at least four or more inches of snow.

He likes a challenge. The farther you drag it the more work it is.

I would have said it would still be messy, but I am not sure. It is warmer out than I was expecting. I would love to know how it looks (how slushy it is still) tonight so I know if I should change my tires. I will check your Strava. I assume it will not be frozen this evening, in any event, so you should be ok.

All signs point to no ice between East-West Falls Church, way too warm. Thank god, I almost ate it twice on that patch right before Great Falls.

I’m going to say “doubt it! but very possibly.” Based on the shear amount, and possible shaded portions, but then again, I’d look forward to someone going that way early – say about now – giving us information.

Just traveled the W&OD from Reston to Falls Church and it’s almost all clear. One slushy spot between Cedar and Gallows. About 95% of the trail is DRY, with patches of wet areas, still attempting to dry. Those few patches may turn to black ice if the conditions are right. Amazing how quickly the ice melted and the trail dried.

Thanks all! W&OD was all clear from Broad St/Leesburg Pike eastbound to Custis turnoff. Mostly dry – a bunch of wet spots but nothing frozen around 7pm. Broad St. wooden bridge a little slushy on one side, but overall no problems.

AM commuters, watch for black ice if it gets below freezing tonight.
