riding in sandals

My daughter has taken to riding in sandals – the kind with straps that keep the heel on, not the floppy kind. When my wife posted a pic on facebook, a friend noted the footwear (apparently with concern.) The bike she was riding was our old MTB, and she says her sandals have pretty good traction. Is there really a reason to wear more closed footwear?

About a month ago i did a fondo in my normal fondo style of suppressing a heart attack while gasping for air. As I was crawling up a monstrous hill in the typical mamil attire, this guy in sandals passes me with surprising ease. I had the greatest urge to hit the hippie with a lava lamp.
I have never had a problem with sandals on bikes until that day.
