I signed last year, I signed this year, but I have no idea what good it does.

I have two friends who don’t need to sign this year because they’ve given up riding on our streets. Both are experienced and skilled, and neither understands how I can keep it up. I guess responsibility has its own rewards.

Kinda kidding about redeeming anything, but it sure would be nice to collect a visible token (ala the neighborhood pace car program) that other people could recognize and respect.

I support WABA and its mission but I didn’t sign last year and won’t this year.

I thought New Year’s resolutions are intended to change behavior not continue it. From my perspective, the WABA resolution, in effect, is asking members to resolve to stop riding irresponsibly. I’ve been riding responsibly for basic transportation since 1978. Signing this pledge seems kind of inane to me.

I think the purpose is for WABA people to be able to offer up a factoid at public meetings (“600 WABA members signed the pledge…”) Instead of signing a WABA pledge, I sign a WABA check. Seems to me that WABA has plenty of more meaningful factoids. The number of people who contribute, directly, through CFC, through United Way. The number of people who volunteer. The number of people who support WABA sponsored events, etc.

FYI the WABA homepage has some extra characters in the ‘learn more’ link of the ride responsibly slide:

@americancyclo – thanks for the tip. I’ve fixed the error in the link. (there was an extra “/” at the beginning). If anyone every sees an error on the website. Feel free to shoot me an email (greg at waba dot org) and I’ll fix it.

In response the Resolution in general. We’ve modified it and we aren’t asking people to be “more” responsible — just responsible. Sign it or don’t.

Last year, the issue was discuss in great detail and what it meant. If you’re interested in all of the discussion, google it — it’s out there. So there is not really a need to rehash the same discussion.

We were unbelievably impressed last year with over 750 signatures and we use that number very frequently in discussions about bicyclists and their commitment to responsibility. That number carries weight. The Resolution has been live for 2 days and we’re at 390 signatures. This year’s number will carry even more weight.

can you elaborate? as a bargaining chip? to get more funding? to show that 750 more cyclists than drivers will attempt to be responsible?
