I have some ideas I’d be willing to express in SQL if you pointed me to a sample dataset.

I do think we should provide extra points (double points?) for team group rides … (We can track those in Strava.)
If getting team members together is a goal, then I think this is a great idea

The cool thing is we can put up a bunch of leaderboards side by side and see if there’s one that works much better than the others, and then maybe we discuss using that one as the official scoring next year.
What I like is several leaderboards all side by side, without any particular one being the “official” one. Last year we added the “Ride Days” by team leaderboard, and that added some interest, and the order of teams was different than the points leaderboard.
Having several, however imperfect they may be, should add interest to the game. We already have some, like Hains Point laps or #kidical that we could include right away. These are already tracked, so the only change would be to the front page look & feel so they are presented as equivalent.
One can imagine a couple of teams, low on the points leaderboard, but with several families, battling it out at the end for the team #kidical bragging rights. That would be fun to watch.December 26, 2016 at 11:53 pm #1062184jrenaut

Someone would have to do a lot of riding to get close to me on the #kidical board

Considering adopting a child, only to give Jon some competition.

I also like Steve O’s suggestion – why not just do it off a baseline, say 200 riders/day = 1.0x multiplier
I’ll take a first stab at establishing a baseline.
Whoever has access to last year’s data, please send me (if you don’t have my email, PM me):
– Number of riders by day for each of the 79 daysAnd remind me of the total number of participants. I’ll use that information to take a stab at numbers we can use as a starting point for this year.
Thanks.

Instead of extra points on the regular leaderboard, how about a separate leaderboard for this?
Teamiest Points
Here’s a strawman:
Solo rides count for nothing
2 riders together get x points for the ride plus miles
3 riders together get 2x points for the ride plus 1.2 x miles
4 riders ” ” 3x points ” ” 1.5 x miles
5 or more riders ” 5x ” ” ” 2.0 x milesIf x = 5 then:
2 riders 10 miles = 25 points (20 miles + 5 ride points)
3 riders 10 miles = 46 points (30 miles x 1.2 = 36 + 10 ride points)
4 riders 10 miles = 75 points
5 riders 10 miles = 125 pointsJanuary 4, 2017 at 3:04 pm #1062641Steve O
ParticipantHow about age-weighted points?
Team points x total age of team members = Geezeriffic scoreJanuary 4, 2017 at 3:05 pm #1062642streetsmarts

In fact the daily 11points has always been what makes or breaks a team. In fact the teams that have always won have been the teams with the most rider daily participation, not miles.
I’m looking at last year’s data, and this actually wasn’t true. Team 20 last year led in rider participation by a good bit and 10th in the official standings. Team 1 was 4th in rider participation and 16th in the official standings. Here I’m defining rider participation as total number of days each member of your team rode. And while the 10 point bonus certainly encourages people to ride, it didn’t affect the final standings very much.

ParticipantIf we wanted to just turn the knob on rider participation, we could do 20 points for riding some minimum distance (maybe we bump that to 2 miles) and then 0.5 points per mile.
We could also do something more complex like 10 points for 1 mile, 20 points for 2 miles up to 50 points for 5 miles and then also add 0.5 points per mile after that. That heavily favors participation but doesn’t penalize people who want to do long rides.
I still like the point multiplier idea for group (other FS players) rides too.

Shhhhh! 😡 Let all us veterans say it slowly and together. “Riding every day is key to winning”
Perhaps not the game but it just rocks on personal goals.

Agreed – I like the 10 point bonus as motivation even if it doesn’t do much for the final standings. And no way to know how many miles don’t get ridden if the bonus goes away. I bet a lot of people who will get on the bike for 12 points won’t do it for 2.
