ParticipantCan Arlington County install racks in strip malls like Pentagon Row, Potomac Yard, etc? or is that all private property? How about Crystal City? (their racks look different from the rest of the County)
Thanks.

ParticipantWhat about a rack at each Metro/ART bus stop? Recently, I noticed that the newer stops at Columbia Pike and South Glebe Road had three or four racks. At a stop closer to home, on Columbia Pike, which has a shelter, I see a bike is always locked up to a sign. If not every stop, maybe a rack at every bus stop with a shelter?

It depends on the location. The county can’t install racks on private property without getting the proper permission from the property owners. The roads and many of the sidewalks are owned/maintained by the County so there is some opportunity to get racks fairly close to these locations though!

ParticipantWould that be the case for Shirlington as well? We could use a couple near the outdoor entrance to the Harris Teeter. A manager there told me that the indoor ones shown in the “ultimate grocery parking guide” aren’t really intended for Harris Teeter customers. They seem to be used as semi-permanent bike storage for condo owners.
While the library has good racks, they fill up fast. I’d be glad to submit a form making this request if it would qualify as a possibility that could be considered.

Go ahead and put it in–even if there isn’t a spot right where you want it, it’ll at least be on the planner’s radars.

ParticipantJust wanted to chime in with a “this really works” – the request I put in at the end of June for bike racks by the Columbia Pike Sheraton was included in the 37 that just went in. So next time there is a “charrette” or other big community meeting at the Sheraton, we’ll actually have some legit bike parking.

ParticipantJust a heads up that we’re going to be starting up with the next round of U-rack installs here in Arlington soon. Let us know if you can think of some spots that could use bike parking: http://www.bikearlington.com/pages/about/request-a-bike-rack/
