ParticipantOption 3, n+1. That is a 34lbs monster. Its essentially a personal cabi bike. If you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly. Don’t try to make the bike something it isn’t.
From posts I’ve seen, I’d say you’d be better off going budget/used road bike for some nice weather fun and some more spirited riding and having your personal cabi for the more utilitarian needs.

ParticipantFew things–you may need a new rear wheel to do this, and the frame may not be compatible if it lacks a hanger for the derailleur (there are ways around this, but its not always easy). This can add some serious cost to your plan.
I vote for the n+1 approach. You breezer is awesome for what it is– a solid urban bike. Sell it for $ if its not what you want anymore and use that $ for what you really want. Or just have lots of bikes

ParticipantYeah, it’s worth more as a sale to someone who wants an igh than a conversion.

ParticipantThanks, everyone!
I already have a Jamis Renegade for my sporty-feeling (though not necessarily fast) commute rides. 😎
I still like riding the Uptown 8 for shopping and after-work rides to destinations when I have to lock up my bike outside a bar or club for at least an hour..
It’s just that I have one year left on the warranty on this Nexus 8. It’s starting to misbehave again (clunky noises, random “snap in, snap out”) on certain gears. I’m familiar with the shifter adjustment process of partially removing the chain case and adjusting the shifter cable knob until the yellow lines match up. This gets rid of the random clunks for a few weeks or so. If it gets bad enough that I have to perform this adjustment once a week, it’ll be time to let the IGH go.
What worries me is the Nexus 8 no longer appears on the Shimano website, so I was mulling the idea of a conventional cassette + derailleur as a possible replacement. The Sheldon Brown website describes a conversion the other way (derailleur to IGH), so I thought “Why not the reverse?”. But Emm’s point about the frame possibly not having a hanger for the derailleur make sense.

ParticipantJust looking at photos of the Uptown 8 online, plus a few other of the Uptown models, I think the 8 does have a rear derailleur hanger. (At least, if they use the same frame for all the Uptown models, then your bike should have a hanger.)

ParticipantI’d leave the IGH be and N+1.
That frame has slotted dropouts with no axle adjusters that I can see = PITA for a derailleur set up. It’s gonna shift like crap if you use any type of indexed shifting.

ParticipantI’ll keep the bike as-is, and just keep doing periodic shifter adjustments on the IGH until those don’t work anymore, then try the mechanic that Steve O and one other person recommended in Arlington for repair, if necessary.
It would have been nice to upgrade to the red-band version of the Nexus 8 but that doesn’t seem to be in production any more.
Thanks, everyone!
