Going to Seabrook Island, SC with the family next week, and am planning to sneak out in the early morning for a 20-30 mile ride with my brother-in-law. We’ve been to Seabrook many times before, but not with bikes. We want to get off Seabrook/Kiawah and see some areas we haven’t before.

Does anybody here vacation in the area and have a route they’d recommend? I’d be grateful for the information.

I’ve seen a route called the “Carolina Low Country Challenge” in Best Bike Rides in the South via Google Books (though a page or two is missing.) And there’s also a book called 25 Bicycle Tours in Savannah & the Carolina Low Country: From Hilton Head to the Okefenokee. But neither is available as an ebook, and neither is available at the Arlington County Library. It’s a bit late to order them on Amazon :)

I’m out of it when it comes to Strava, but I gather that would show others’ routes in the area?

I don’t know the area well, but since no one has answered yet, I’ll mention that Map My Ride has some area routes mapped. It doesn’t show anything at Seabrook, but the Hollywood locations seems to have some rides mapped out on Seabrook. There are lots around Charleston. Makes me want to go down for a ride.

I have not been to that area, but I took a look on the interwebs for a bit and found the following that might be useful for building your own route:

MattAune might know this area, if he ever checks in here.

Thanks very much, just what I needed. We’ll try the loop around the north part of Johns Island.

We were just down there. Some of this depends on what you want to do. If you’re just training, there’s a loop on Seabrook that’s popular. Those of my group that did training rides down there enjoyed some of the roads on Kiawah that were farthest East, where there just weren’t any cars, and there were tons of birds. They are serious about the no-bikes-on-roads thing where there’s a path, and unfortunately the paths have really poor road crossings (bad sightlines, steep drops/rises), so I wouldn’t try to train on those.

That area is just lovely. Take lots of bug spray.
