Yeah why not. If the downhill gets too crazy I’ll just lift my legs up and let the pedals do their thing. This is why we have brakes.
I just ordered an 18T cog to lower my gearing from the 17T I’ve been running. Not only am I slightly fearful of this ride, but I’m still recovering from BAFS, and haven’t rediscovered my FG zen yet. I suspect 18T will feel great going up, but not as much going down; I’m hoping it will get in at Bikenetic early enough that I can mount it and try it on my commute before Saturday…

ParticipantI recently added a spd/cad sensor to my FG – it’s been interesting to see the data. Mostly I would say you can definitely spin faster on a FG than with a freewheel.

Well, that’s good, because dcv said this morning that he wants to do the Tri360 hill ride fixed again this Saturday. You and I can be the sweeps for the ride (since we’ll both be guaranteed to be off the back the whole time).
Ooooh… I think this Sat will be the Tri360 Shake Shack version too! (One free beverage.) You also get to ride up some parking ramps in Tysons Corner.

I’ve been planning to do the opposite. 46×18 spins too fast on the downhills for my taste.

Participant46X16 FTMFW.
Though I think my legs would literally fall off if I tried to stay within a mile of dcv and the rest of this ride.

I will probably feel the same way, but for the current moment, my legs are protesting the 17T climbs. (I didn’t have this problem before! :p)

ParticipantHow do you think the group would react if someone were to show up on a cabi?

True, last night’s Wednesday Nights Sprint in the Crystal City garage
Wish I’d known you were there. I still have your bicycle icicle from BAFS 2014 (although I didn’t have it with me at #ccwns).

ParticipantThree of us did the ride on fixed gear last Saturday, it’s a good route and great training for Kill Bill. The ride is billed as no-drop and there was a sweep, but there was a big gap between the lead and sweep so riders in the middle could easily get lost. I had the route on Garmin, otherwise I think you need to keep the lead group in sight or ride with someone who knows the route. Our gear ratios:
• 48×17 (74 gi)
• 46×17 (71 gi) – me
• 46×18 (67 gi)74 gi had to walk twice at the two streets that Marc, Will & Shawn warned us about – N. Quebec (steep) and Rock Spring (longer slog with steep ending). The ride .gpx file says it’s 1,600 ft of elevation, but our Strava data recorded just over 2,000 ft over 22 miles.
If you’re fixed on this ride I don’t think it’s the downhills you should worry about, my $0.02.

I’m pretending you didn’t write that.

Whoops, I rode 48-18. Just counted, so I’m 72 GI. I thought I was really close in cadence to DCV. Maxed out my legs on that ride at 31mph.

Wait… are you doing KB fixed this year?!
If I attempt this ride it’ll be 42-16 on 28mm (69 gi). I think the ride is roughly 100ft/mi.
N Quebec is easier if you can get some speed into it but I assume I wouldn’t go as fast into it FG – never tried it though. (I did try out a steeper downhill last week and got to about 35mph/170rpm but usually it’s more like 135-145rpm max. More flat/casual rides I don’t go much above 110-120rpm.) Sometimes on this ride the lead group will do Quebec x2.

ParticipantCurrent forecast: 20mph NW winds, showers possible, high 30s/low 40s = unlikely for me to ride, Sat is usually my rest day.

Now that BAFS is over, pfffff. Tucked in bed with blankets it is.
(Have we reached enough reasons to get a fixie yet? I feel like we’ve digressed a bit.)

For fun I did it 5 times yesterday. With gears, though.
