Only a few more hours until Freezing Saddles begins! And that means your Strava rides count, starting at midnight tonight.

Yes, we know that you haven’t got your team assignments yet. They won’t be announced until the happy hour, which is likely to be in early to mid-January. (You’ll get a separate e-mail about that.) However, at that time, all miles starting on January 1 will count retroactively.

Now is a good time to make sure you appear on the list at https://freezingsaddles.org/people/. If you do not, Freezing Saddles is unable to read your Strava miles due to one or both of the following:

What about if you registered late, and aren’t sure whether you are on a team? Ride anyway! If you ever get onto a team (because you sub in for someone who drops out, because a new team is formed, etc.), your miles starting on January 1 will count retroactively. This is true even if you sub in for someone who gets injured halfway through the competition.

Why is it so important to start riding now? Well, if you wait a week to start, you’ll have a very hard time catching up. That’s because the points system puts a premium on consistent riding. You get 10 points for each day you ride at least a mile. You then get 10 points for the first mile, 9 points for the second, etc. So if you ride just 1 mile a day for the next week, you’d have 140 points. If you wait a week and then try to make up for lost time in one day, you’d have to ride 85 miles to end up with the same number of points.

Also, we always have some recognition for those who ride every day of the competition. Obviously, that can’t happen if you miss the very first day.

If you are having trouble with any aspect of the competition, you can click on this link to figure out who is in charge.

Two questions! First, does location count? Metro area, cold climate, etc? I am not going anywhere :( so I won’t be riding in a warm locale this winter, but in principle is there a restriction? (For that matter, a strict interpretation of the theme of this event would suggest that none of our rides on this balmy New Years should count! :)

Second, does the calculation mechanism account for multiple rides in a day? I will on occasion do a ride with my daughter and then later (or earlier) do a solo ride? Seems unfair to restart the point count at 10 for the first mile twice in one day. I presume the calc works on daily total miles but am just checking.

    Have a great day, all!

OK, I’m an intelligent guy but I can’t read, apparently. I reread or read the rules and a) miles in a day is what matters, and b) can ride anywhere, in any climate.
