I’m the OP, I was looking for the name of a product that I could apply, be low maintenance and do a proper job lubing under most circumstances. I might ride 20 miles a week if we’re lucky. I didn’t want a bunch of different products for different situations. Isn’t there an all-purpose product?

No. If it doesn’t wash off in the rain, it’s sticky and will get covered with gunk when it’s dry. If you live in portland you can just use wet weather lube year round. Here, your best bet is to use dry weather lube and just apply frequently if riding in the rain.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll blue stuff is for “extreme” weather, and it may be stickier than their gold lube, but not by much. I use it almost all of the time, and it doesn’t pick up a lot of stuff—not like oil-based wet-weather lube. All that said, you’re probably right about “extreme” lubes being overkill in this area (even that blue stuff I use).

I also prefer to use a light lube (ProGold ProLink) and apply it more often. Whenever I’ve tried heavier lube, or the wax-based lubes (including White Lightning), my drivetrain got gunked up.

But chain lube is one of those subjects where everyone has their own preference. To each their own.

I use triflow. And I keep my bike as dirty as possible because the second I get it clean, rain is inevitable.

On a related note I just got my drive train back to sparkling like new. That all but guarantees torrential downpours for the foreseeable future.

And just to make sure there is no right answer to the lube question, I’ll throw in that I’ve used Boeshield T-9 ever since finding out about it on the CompuServe cycling forum 20 years ago. That boaters use this stuff shows it is good around water.

thanks for the many replies. I will look at all the products listed, though I’m partial to the ease of the RocknRoll one
