Saturday, October 21, 2017. The brand new District Wharf (The Wharf, for short) on DC’s SW waterfront will have been open for a week. Grand Opening craziness and traffic will have subsided, the new shops and cafes will have had a week to find their groove, and of course the Fish Market remains. It will be perfect time for an expedition to The Wharf from your bike shop on the Pike, to explore, dine, plunder (with credit card in hand), etc.

We are going to make a leisurely ride of it, bypassing Columbia Pike and using the north loop around Fort Myer to Memorial Bridge and into DC. Going back, we will use the equally scenic Mt Vernon Trail, to Four mile Run, and back to the bike shop via Shirlington. It is intended as an easy route with few severe climbs, and relatively minimal car traffic to deal with. Also, the cycle track along Maine Avenue in front of The Wharf should be available to us. This ride is intended for anyone, on any bike, who wants to ride with us- your Ride Leader leaves no one behind.

I’ll let someone else have the ego trip of being the first bike shop to ride to The Wharf. But we at Papillon Cycles won’t be far behind.

Sad I’m going to be out of town. This is a great idea for a ride!

Getting closer… Some restaurants and cafes, including the Velo CafĂ© at District Hardware and Bike, are already open, more to follow by the weekend. Based on all the “Wharf Garage Full” signboards, getting there by bike *might* be the easiest way of all!

Fine-tuning the route to work with and/or sidestep Maine Ave, and dance around fish market traffic, is an ongoing process. P.S. I am serious about this being a ride for anyone at a non-race pace. My wife will refuse to ride otherwise. A bikeshare bike of any sort? Cargo bike with kids aboard? Why not?

T – one day to RAID Papillon-District Wharf. Enough of the shops and restaurants/cafes are open, including the Velo Cafe I was banking on (to anyone doing the Coffeeneuring Challenge, here’s a chance to quickly notch one) to make this more than worthwhile. Still fine tuning the route- that last quarter mile to the Wharf, but the raid is a GO.

    See you tomorrow morning!
