Good morning.

My name is (bobco85), and I am a cyclist living in the Ballston/Buckingham area. I want to share my concerns about the stretch of road heading southbound on North Quincy Street between Wilson Boulevard and North 5th Road, and I was recommended to send the e-mail to this address.

There is currently construction of a few large buildings next to the road, and although there is normally a bike lane and sidewalk on that side, both are impassable. I know there are “Sidewalk Closed” signs on either side of the construction area, but there are no signs indicating that the bike lane is no longer usable for that block. Also, at the edge of the Quincy/Wilson intersection, a construction barrier is sticking out from the southwest corner where the bike lane would normally continue. This forces cyclists to merge with vehicular traffic in the middle of the intersection without any signage informing drivers/cyclists of this merge. This in combination with pedestrians who choose to ignore the sidewalks creates a hazardous area where the southbound lane becomes too crowded with traffic trying to stay out of the northbound lane. It is especially hazardous during dusk/night.

Because of this, I would like to request some sort of signage on Quincy Street at the Wilson Blvd intersection informing traffic (both cycling and vehicular) of the bike lane merge and/or the removal of the construction barrier sticking out into the road at the southwest corner of that intersection. Also, is there an estimated completion date for the construction?

Quick update: While I haven’t gotten any response yet (I don’t expect a fast response due to the holidays), I did walk by that area and found out why the construction barrier is sticking out into the street at Wilson/Quincy:

I seriously hope that is temporary, otherwise it means that the corner will stick out there and we could lose the bike lane for that section.

Couldn’t dig up a map on my parent’s slow internet connection, but I found a description of the final plan for Quincy once construction is done.

PRE-CONSTRUCTION QUINCY: 56-feet – two 18-foot travel lanes, 5 to 6 foot wide bike lanes in each direction, 8-foot parking lane on the east side of the street. At Wilson Boulevard the street widens to accommodate a left turn lane and a channelized right turn lane.

POST-CONSTRUCTION QUINCY: 49-feet – one 11-foot travel lane in each direction, 5-foot wide bike lanes in each direction, 8-foot parking lane on each side of the street and a 1-foot center stripe. Approaching Wilson Boulevard the street widens to approximately 66-feet to accommodate a left turn lane and a right turn lane. At the intersection of Wilson Boulevard nubs are used to narrow crossing distances.

So the bike lanes will remain, but because they’re narrowing the asininely wide travel lanes everything is shifting around. The narrower travel lanes should make Quincy less of a drag-strip through that section.
