** Please Respond to this thread if you want to join this ride**

First call to judge interest in exploring on two wheels a spate of public works of art that now constitute critical mass in the most bike unfriendly haven of Tyson’s Corner in Vienna VA. Here’s a taste of what’s to find there https://www.tysonsreporter.com/2019/08/22/have-you-spotted-these-pieces-of-art-around-tysons/

This will be ~15 mile route at a conversational pace with lots of stops, as well as a few #FSwormhole #lakefinder #parkfinder and Quaxapalooza opportunities (can you say #BAFS2021SmallBiz – Lazy Mike’s or Taco [emoji895] Bamba?)

Rough itinerary:

12:30 pm – assemble for optional lunch, bathrooms and pre-ride logistics
Lazy Mike’s Delicatessen
★★★★★
(703) 532-5299
https://goo.gl/maps/c6qvjnWuyxQSCmxF9

12:59 PM: Wheels Roll from Lazy Mike’s

1:15PM: Depart rendezvous (if necessary) Shrevewood Elementary School
https://goo.gl/maps/B2myigDNRNWjdt9h6

1:30-3:30PM: Roam around Tyson’s Corner looking for public works of art while not becoming road kill.

3:30 PM: Head back to Lazy Mike’s via Taco Bamba (Pimmit Hills). We may split up at this point for those who need to scaddle or are hangry.

~4 PM: Depart Lazy Mike’s via Shrevewood ES for “Homage to Newton” in Fairview Park. This will add +7 miles out and back, FYI

~4:45 PM: Return to Lazy Mike’s/Shrevewood ES/ W&OD trail before twilight for those who have parked cars, or need to return to the W&OD trail to whence they came.

Notes:

1. Lazy Mike’s has a take-out window, ample outdoor seating and a large tent in the parking lot. They are not seating indoors but you can enter to use their bathrooms.

2. Optional and more abundant all-day parking available at Shrevewood Elementary School at mile 8.0 on the W&OD trail which can easily be a rendezvous point, or used to access Lazy Mike’s.

3. I scouted out this route over the summer, and tested it with some brave test subjects Nadine and HokieBeth but now believe that I can route a group safely without getting run over by Capital Beltway or Mall-bound traffic. Stay tuned for posting of actual route.

4. For extra credit, I will throw in a post-ride-ride to a rare, original “homage to Newton” by Salvador Dali #publicartfinder (located on private property but visible from a wormhole so we must be berry, berry quite and tip-toe around some tulips;-), an extra #litebrite sunset #lakefinder opportunity and possibly #civilwarmarker stop if we have enough daylight left. So budget an extra hour if you are keen on any extra Pointless Prize opportunities.

5. Face covering, helmet, and working front-n-rear lights & social distancing mandatory as we are at the height of a pandemic and will encounter some high volume traffic intersections.

6. We will break into smaller groups if we have more than half a dozen riders. PM me if you are ready/willing to be a ride marshal and possibly lead/sweep a small group.c57ac4be97ab80873a5c0b0f025cbf88.jpg

Boomer, I’ve already committed to lead a New Deal ride that day, so I’m sorry to miss it. However, I’d like to offer to lead a Public Art ride in Reston if anyone is interested on another day. I created the routes that show off Reston’s Public Art and that are on the Public Art Reston website, so I know where it all is and some basic info about most of the pieces. There are three routes — 1 north of DTR, 1 south of DTR and 1 that goes on both sides and sees it all! Let me know if you’re interested!

No worries – I’m just doing the New Deal ride for some friends and I who missed the official one earlier. As far as Reston, what do you think about Inauguration Day? Since they want us as far from the scene as possible, it might be a great day to head to Reston! We’d start at the Wiehle-Reston Metro Station (some of the art is right there). The North Side ride is 11 miles, South Side is 12 and the whole shebang is 19. There are about 25 works included although I can pare it down. At some point one’s head starts to spin. When that happens, it’s harder to appreciate the works. :-)

Boomer, thank you for an interesting and fun ride around a car-centric area to see public art.

Thank you bikesnick for coming, and sharing your knowledge of the TyCo doomsday landscape. Some of those roads and rollers (e.g. Jones Branch Dr) make for great cycling when there are no cars around.
