    How to play #PublicArtFinder:

    1. RIDE your bike AT LEAST 10 MILES and share on this thread the discovery of any art form (loosely defined: you know it when you see it) that is readily accessible to the general public. Only one art form allowed per 10+mile ride. If you want to discover more art, then start a new ride on Strava and post another art find. Rides less than 10 miles do not count.

    2. POST a picture [using Small resolution] on this thread of your art find with some or all of YOUR BIKE IN IT. Pics that don’t include your bike will not count. Adding your pic to your Strava ride helps w/ verification, but does not substitute for posting on this thread.

    3. #Publicartfinder pics must be POSTED ON THE DAY of the ride just like #scavhunt.

    4. Include the LOCATION of your art find so that others may find it, too.

    5. Use HASHTAG #publicartfinder (not CaSe SeNsItIvE) in your Strava Ride title so that it will appear on the FS2023 #publicartfinder leaderboard https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/hashtag/publicartfinder I will sweep this leaderboard
for data periodically to feed the official #publicartfinder scoreboard found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ob3HlhU34D4xrtbttsDIAu2knT8MOIZQ2EcAr6s5YF0/edit#gid=358841852

    6. FOLLOW ME (Boomer Cycles) on Strava so that I can verify your #publicartfinder rides.

Entries will be judged by some faceless cabal on subjective criteria that may include use of creative objects (like your bike interacting w/ an art form), composition, light, artistic flair, witty captions, great stories, # of quality submissions, or # likes, kudos or dislikes, and bonus points. In the event of a tie, efficacy rules: most art discoveries/least amount of miles wins.

If you played #publicartfinder in years past, go find some New2U art!

Now go Ride and Seek some public art ;-

The Vienna Art Society celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019 with 42 artists benches. Each bench was painted with a unique, original artwork by a VAS volunteer artist. Although most of the benches were auctioned off to raise money for VAS, several of them remain in various locations in downtown Vienna. This one is located in front of the Freeman Store and Museum on Church St SE, just north of where the W&OD crosses.

See this Georgetown Voice link for more and DCist for the controversy with the historic board.

    2 extra points!

    1. This one of the coolest pieces of public art in DC, IMO, and I’m glad to see that it is still there. When it was first installed (in the before pandemic times), some of the neighbors complained and lobbied city reps to have it banned. Good to see that the artist prevailed!

    2. You included address, backstory and hyperlinks, clap [emoji1376]

For a number of years, the South Lakes HS STEAM Team has created and installed a sculpture atop the spillway in Lake Thoreau (at the South Lakes Drive end) in Reston. The current sculpture (upper right corner of the photo, hard to get a larger image and still get my bike in the photo!) is titled “Cerebral.” More about this project, including videos of its installation, and the STEAM Team statement about the sculpture here: https://publicartreston.org/project/cerebral/

New2Me art behind Taco Bamba at 164 Maple Ave W in Vienna is a mural about W&OD Trail. The mural is big; so I had to take a panorama shot. My bike is in the center.

I saw a lot of art in Anacostia today. This was probably the least interesting piece but it was huge, colorful, well executed and I’d never seen it before. So it’s the one I stopped to photograph. Ketcham Elementary School.
