“Thoreau’s Ensemble” by Ben Volta at the entry to the Colt’s Neck underpass in Reston, on the east side, between the intersections of Glade Dr and South Lakes Dr. This view shows the mural wrapping from the front around into the interior of the underpass.
Philadelphia artist and educator Ben Volta was selected in 2018 to create a permanent public artwork for the Reston community at the Colts Neck Road underpass through a public art process facilitated by Public Art Reston. Thoreau’s Ensemble is inspired by Reston’s fifty-five miles of pathways and a quote by poet and naturalist Henry David Thoreau to, “Pursue some path, however crooked and narrow, in which you can walk with love and reverence.” Volta adapted the passage for community workshops where he tasked more than 650 participants to, “draw a path (however wide, narrow, straight, jagged, crooked, curly and winding) in which we can all look at and enjoy with love and reverence.” Volta incorporated the resulting 710 individual path drawings into the final design of panels that cover the exterior and interior walls of the underpass with a layered and lyrical multi-colored composition.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Located just west of the North Shore Drive Underpass. Access the path from the end of Lake Anne Plaza closest to the lake. Cross the Van Gogh foot bridge, turn right, and continue through the underpass. There are a number of cool sculptural features in the underpass on either side as well – no photos, sorry! (You can see my bike if you zoom in on the hole.)Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Carved sign outside Frazier Hill Farm, 19830 Ridgeside Rd in Bluemont, VA. A horse is carved on the left side of the sign, and a chicken is carved on the right, next to my bike. And if you zoom in on this photo on my Strava post, you’ll see a mural painted on the building in the upper right quadrant of the pic – image is too blurry in Tapatalk to see it.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
