If this is not the largest mural in the DC region (as claimed by the Boro developer who commissioned it), it is certainly one of the largest, measuring 400’ long and 70’ tall. It’s located at 8350 Broad St, and is clearly visible from Leesburg Pike / Rt 7. The artists are Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn from Baltimore. They began working on it in May 2021, and it was finished in June and celebrated with a huge party.

It is indeed colossal; I had to use pano mode to capture it!

These icons are located in the north entry to Washington Plaza at Lake Anne in Reston. They were created in 1965 by the famous NYC design firm Chermeyeff & Geismar, consistent with the pop art influences of the 1960s. They were originally on the outside wall of Lake Anne Pharmacy. When the original independent pharmacist owner retired in 2014, another independent pharmacy could not be found to purchase it and other businesses moved into the space. The icons were donated to the Reston Historic Trust and Museum which restored and reinstalled them in one of the entryways to Lake Anne Plaza.

This mural, “Chesapeake Vistas” by artist Keith Naquin, was commissioned by the Council for the Arts of Herndon in 2013 and is located in the alley to the left of 754 Elden St, Herndon. Naquin painted the mural on the wall of the Ice House Cafe so that it was visible from inside O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub which was just across the alley. In several O’Sullivan’s reviews, patrons mention that viewing the mural out the window gave them the impression of dining on the Chesapeake Bay. Sadly, after nearly 40 years of serving up delicious food, often accompanied by jazz from local musicians, Ice House Café closed it’s doors on January 1st, 2019. If you look closely at the photo, you’ll see a faded “Ice House Café” just above the barred window of the shanty.
