ParticipantShawn, you’ll be fine! I saw you ride through everything post Capital Cross Classic with a kid in tow.
I’m planning to join Team Bikenetic yeah, and I’ve signed up for a few races already too. This’ll be the most driving I’ve done all year
I talked a bit with The Kid at last week’s Gravelly Pt practice: I think NCVC being such a big team will have more juniors specific stuff, and more direct peers for him. But Bikenetic will certainly be a fun team. And the jerseys are gonna be sweeeeeeeet!

ParticipantCan I be on the team and get a sweet jersey even if I can never make the races?

ParticipantSeveral times this summer I’ve seen a guy doing cyclocross training at Idylwood Park around the soccer field. He brings his own portable barriers made of pvc pipe and practices dismounting, carrying/running with his bike over the barriers, and remounting.

I think vvill is right; while Bikenetic will no-doubt be awesome-fun, NCVC is probably the better team to join from a training and racing (and riding) development perspective. Ignoring the whole juniors factor (which shouldn’t be ignored), NCVC is just a huge team with lots of group ride opportunities multiple times a week that are going to be excellent places to learn to ride in the pack — in addition to focused physical training . I’ve done a lot of riding with various folks on the NCVC team this year — the morning Italian store rides, Tomahawk breakfast, etc. Everyone I have met is very welcoming to newcomers and generally awesome. If I didn’t have a sweet corporate team deal already, that is almost certainly the group I would join.

ParticipantHe has been told that he is “19” and will not be racing as a Junior, altho he can train with them.

Ah ok, I wasn’t sure about where the line was there. NCVC will still have more riders around his age I imagine. That said, the small size of the Bikenetic team could be a good thing too.

ParticipantI would also give consideration to what type of racing he’ll be doing. I don’t see any advantage to racing with teammates in a CX race — or a MTB race — but there is a big advantage to having a team in a road race. So, if he’s planning to do any road racing, the larger team would be an advantage. If this is just about having fun doing some CX racing (since that’s what CX racing is, right?) then I’d just focus on the fun factor, and not weight the “training” aspect in the decision at all.

Ah yes, you’re right. I was thinking of Bluemont, which has similar setup with folks bringing out barriers for organized team practices!

Well it works for NCVC. Until recently I thought they were just a jersey company for Freds.
