The grandiose project may never be built, but it would be very interesting if it does become reality. The Øresund Bridge connects the Copenhagen metro area in Denmark with Malmö, Sweden. The bridge is the second longest in Europe, and the longest to carry both cars and rail. Now two Swedish firms are proposing to add two elevated cycle ways to the bridge. The bike highways would be suspended above the car lanes, and protected from the weather.
The Straits are 8 miles wide. Many of us have ridden across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge between Alexandria and Prince George’s County, MD, but the Potomac River is less than a mile wide at that point. I wonder what it would be like to ride on a bridge when you can’t really see either shore.
Since this is not a local or American project, I don’t have any strong feelings about the proposal either way. If they do build it, I would be tempted to ride it at some point (if I ever visit Copenhagen).
