ParticipantSpeaking of centuries, has anyone rode the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo? I’m thinking of trying it this year, wondering a bit what I’d be in for.

It’s hot, hilly and hard. You’ll do it on a road bike but you want to have at least 28s for your tires and something bigger than a 25 on your cassette.

I’m currently running Specialized pro Roubaix 30s, should I look for something with some tread like Sammy Slicks for the gravel?
Cassette goes to 34…if that’s not enough I probably shouldn’t be there

No need for treads. Sounds like you’ve got a good setup for it.

ParticipantPower of 10 Century #5 Completed: Century on Day 4 of RAGBRAI riding from Leon, IA to Centerville, IA. The route included a route around a lake created by a dam and meeting John Karras who co-founded RABGRAI 44 years ago. Mr. Karras is now 87 years old. I wore my WABA jersey and rocked my Crystal Rides socks but forgot to put sunscreen on my nose. I also wore sun leggings for the first time which worked great.
https://www.strava.com/activities/656498680For extra bonus points, this also marks the fifth state that I have done a century in this year: Virginia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Iowa.
Full Power of 10 List To Date:
Century #1 – Six Pillars Century: Mostly flat. I saw two eagles in a tree!
https://www.strava.com/activities/568789480Century #2 – Cap2Cap: Partially on trail. Really good signage but terrible cue sheet. Great weather. Yummy burritos for lunch.
https://www.strava.com/activities/576083253Century #3 – Discover Hudson Valley Ride: 5,700+ feet of climbing which is the most I’ve ever done. Great views of the Hudson. Tree lined backroads.
https://www.strava.com/activities/621951203Century #4:Tour de Chocolate Town in Hershey, PA. It was a build your own century ride with a 50 mile loop and two 25 mile loops to choose from. Lots of turns. Some nice views of the rolling valleys of Pennsylvania. Just under 4,500 feet of climbing which became a bit mentally tough during the last 25 mile loop. I rode with Komorebi and LeprosyStudyGroup and saw AFHokie at the beginning and later on a flyby. Also the fourth state that I’ve ridden a century in this year.

ParticipantJuly century done on Thursday, July 28, 111 miles riding portions of the Main Radweg (out and back on opposite sides of the Main River from Frankfurt to Wörth). That’s seven of seven months in 2016, making 67 consecutive months.

ParticipantI’m aiming for silver level — ten mix-and-match metric and imperial centuries. Six down, four to go:
1. To Baltimore (metric): Taking the MARC train back to DC was surprisingly easy. Navigating the baseball traffic by the Inner Harbor and getting to Baltimore’s Penn Station was less so. With Judd and LeprosyStudyGroup. https://www.strava.com/activities/592370991.
2. To Annapolis and BWI (imperial): Any ride that involves apple pie ice cream, wild rays in the river, and something like 10 different trails is a pretty good day on the bike. With Judd and LeprosyStudy Group. https://www.strava.com/activities/613436308.
3. Virginia Capital Trail (imperial): Beautiful trail, mostly flat, and not crowded even on a nice weekend. Plus, the cyclists usually wave or say hi to each other. With CBGanimal and two others from NoVA CBG. https://www.strava.com/activities/622073073.
4. Tour de Chocolate Town (imperial): Rolling hills, lots of cornfields, and a few adorable baby cows and ponies. Also my first encounter with a Nutella and jelly sandwich. Where have you been all my life? With Judd and LeprosyStudyGroup; saw AFHokie. https://www.strava.com/activities/643082198.
5. Steve O’s sendoff (metric): I rode with the sendoff group as far as the Green Lizard, rode home, then added a few more miles to turn it into a metric. https://www.strava.com/activities/644239301.
6. Tour de Frederick (metric): Riding a metric when the heat index was over 110 wasn’t the brightest idea I’ve ever had. So my helmet is off to the high-wheel riders, some of whom wore period clothing, racing in Frederick later that afternoon. With Judd; saw AFHokie. https://www.strava.com/activities/674711570.

ParticipantCentury 6 Completed today! – Started with a nice loop down to Mason Neck with komorebi, LeprosyStudyGroup and Chris. Met Reba and her husband Robert for snacks at Wegmans. Met rootchopper. Saw Ed C as we were leaving. Ate some sushi.

Participant105 miles in a big loop around Darmstadt. That’s eight of eight months in 2016 and 68 consecutive months. It actually felt like summer for a change, high was over 90°F.

ParticipantCentury#7 Complete: A big loop from Alexandria to Ft. Washington, Indian Head, Indian Head Rail Trail and back to Old Town Alexandria with komorebi, bobco, Andrea and Chris. LSG biked along to Ft. Washington. Ft. Washington has great views of the Potomac and I highly recommend a visit. The Indian Head Rail Trail is great. Well maintained and the Oxon Hill Cycling Club has done great work to constantly improve the trail. The planned route was 70ish miles, but with the two and fro from my house to the start point, I was just 12 miles short of a century so I hit a few Hains Point laps. I also reached 6,000 miles for 2016 on this ride.

ParticipantEight down, two to go to hit silver level.
7. Alexandria-Ft. Washington-Indian Head loop (metric): We rode our bikes right into Fort Washington and the park rangers didn’t bat an eye, just smiled and wished us a good morning. The Indian Head and Henson Creek trails were awesome oases amid the suburban speedways. With barbielwc, bobco85, CBGanimal, and Judd, and partway with LeprosyStudyGroup. https://www.strava.com/activities/691184242.
8. Indian Head 100 (imperial): Beautiful scenic route and great signage, although they kept running low on food at the rest stops. A number of Forum members and coffee club regulars were kind enough to let me hang on their rear wheels for a few moments before they sped off into the distance, including CBGanimal, f148vr, FastFriendlyGuy, GK, Judd, Kitty, LeprosyStudyGroup, MK, Reba, and Steve O. Saw Amalitza, consularrider, and Tania, but missed seeing Rod. https://www.strava.com/activities/701778664.

ParticipantCentury #8: Indian Head 100 – This was a great ride, because so many forum members were there. I rode at various points with Kitty, Steve O, GK, Chris Watson, FastFriendlyGuy, LeprosyStudyGroup and Komorebi. Despite the heat and humidity, it was my fastest century.
https://www.strava.com/activities/701835338
Century #9: Amish Country Tour – A great rural ride out of Dover, DE. This is a ridiculously flat century, with maybe four spots where I noticed any type of incline. Rode with Komorebi and Andrea Noseck. Saw a cyclist in the parking lot as we were leaving the Holiday Inn and began my usual pre-ride trash talking by saying, “See that guy, we’re totally going to beat him today.” As we approached, it turns out that it was Bob James, who I had stalked on Strava and NBC but hadn’t met before. Trash talk fail on that one as Bob rides both fast and far. We ran into Bob again at a rest stop and got to chat. Great guy! Also, Amish pie at the second stop was some of the pest pie I’ve ever had (don’t tell my mom). I saw several horse drawn buggies and also a chicken crossing a road.

ParticipantGold star challenge complete!
Century #10: Backroads Century – Starting in Shepherdstown, WV which is a lovely town. I went up on Saturday with Komorebi and did the 35 mile ride through Antietam. I’d like to go back and ride through Antietam and read all of the plaques. This ride really is accurately named. Mostly back roads, some spots of bad pavement and potholes. From about mile 20 to mile 50 I felt like I was suffering at times and had to apply Rule 5. Highlights included multiple apple orchards, riding along the river, seeing a cow in the middle of a pond and the frozen ice at the end. Saw Tania at the end and saw Felipe doing some marshaling during the course. Missed Chris Watson and consularrider, who according to Strava were generally pulling into rest stops just as I was leaving.
