Porta-Potties @ Gravelly Point

A note from Papillon Cycles’ Arlington Loop Ride this morning (which was wonderful, btw): We stopped for rest and relief at Gravelly Point during our ride, only to find the 4 porta-potties were, um, filled to the brim with sewage. Pretty grim, and a good test of desperation. I provided comic relief to my fellow riders by almost barfing on the aroma. We “went” elsewhere on the journey.

It is nice of someone to provide these on the trial, but they do need to be cleaned on some regular basis. Who do we raise hell with?

I had ridden past LBJ Grove many times but never went there. One day, I decided to ride around, to see what was over there. I have to say that it was a very strange scene. On a late summer afternoon, men were just walking in circles around the grove, with their shirts off and with vacant expressions on their faces. Almost as though I had wandered into a zombie movie or something. I posted about it and then people told me about the “cruising” reports there.

I don’t think it’s unsafe, but just be aware of what takes place there.

Is there a map of this route posted anywhere? I’ve gotten lost in the vicinity of the Pentagon before, so I need all the help I can get. I’d like to avoid gravelly point in the afternoons and want to try out this route as an alternative.

Where are you trying to go? WO&D? Old Town??

Here is my route which takes me out to Columbia Pike/South Joyce Street. Because of the one way streets on the Pentagon reservation, you can’t go the exact same way coming and going. I’d be happy to show you in person if we can find an equitable time.

From the 14th St bridge/MVT to south side of Crystal City.
