Also, the water in Lake Custis was pretty clear, as I could see tire tracks in the mud at the bottom. I wouldn’t have minded riding through it, but I hate having wet feet and even my fenders couldn’t prevent the big spash as I pedaled.

Agreed. This was really fun and had me giggling last Friday, when I was riding in the rain anyway. Today, I was looking forward to a dry commute. Lake Custis said “ha ha ha, you get wet bum this morning”.

Of course there is a “real” pond on the custis. The water looks almost good enough to drink.

I recognize that green pond — I see every time I enter the custis N Taylor St entrance from my house and go left to Rosslyn!

Always thought it’d be quite nasty to take a dip in there bike & all :)

You won’t feel like that if you hit a puddle that is hiding a deep pothole.

Or just debris. In the best case, you fall over in a puddle, in the worst case you break something. That said, it is fun. :)

Yeah, some of my neighbors want to stock that pond for fishing. Yuck!

Good luck to them, there’s at least one snapping turtle in that muck – or at least there was as of a couple of years ago. I came upon it crossing the trail to the sister pond one rainy day.

The pond was gone by yesterday afternoon, and I’m pretty sure a person had to make that happen. Huge thanks to either Arlington County staff, or a helpful neighbor, for making that happen.
