I figure it’s only a matter of time ’til someone posts up in “Missed Connections” about a near-miss involving someone cutting across the ROW while hunting digital critters.
I avoided a group of four or five young, overweight Pokémon players today on the W&OD, east of the Custis cutoff at mile 4.

ParticipantOh lordy, Pokemon on the MUTs now. Hopefully this fad will die out as quickly as it became popular.

Maybe a benefit of this is that it will get some people to get outside for a change. Hopefully, it won’t get them killed.

ParticipantI came across two boys lost in their phone on the path on my way home today. My loud warning that I was passing them surprised them. I presume they were playing this game.

ParticipantI wonder what kind of liability the creators of the app could have…

I kept saying this to myself as I encountered packs of aimless kids, staring intently at their phones, otherwise unaware of their environment and who/what was in it. Most were on foot, but a couple groups were on skateboards, which to me, isn’t a good thing to be on whilst staring at the phone. But I’m old…

My understanding is that they have a robust disclaimer when the app launches.

I don’t. I’m having a lot of fun with it, and it’s actually getting me out from in front of my computer during lunch. However, I’m also looking up from the phone on a regular basis to make sure I’m not about to step off a cliff or onto a busy freeway or whatnot.

KeymasterYep. Evening commute yesterday, approaching bridge over Rt 50 near TJMS, young lady right in the middle of the trail, complete with large ear-muff sized head phones to block out all external noises like my warning bell, going “DING-DING-DING-DING!”. She looked up when I was about three feet from her and at a near stop by that point. Judging from the smile on her face, she looked to be having a good time. Glad one of us was.

ParticipantOkay, clearly we need to add to the forum lexicon. This is going to require some serious collaboration and creativity as we move to a consensus definition.
I’ll start with a strawman
Crazy Ivysaur :: Crazy Ivysaur is a biped human similar in mental capacity to a dinosaur. Crazy Ivysaurs have begun to spend more time in sunlight as the virtual reality game PokemonGo has forced them to relearn how to walk. Crazy Ivasaur’s nautral habitat is in the middle of a MUT or traffic staring at a smart phone. Cracy Ivysaur’s are rare as their life spans are so short.

ParticipantOhmygodlookoutasaur. Darwindeadalops. Fallinhole. Hitsatree. Walkunderbus.
The possibilities are almost endless.

ParticipantPerhaps I’m too old to appreciate Pokemon, but wouldn’t old fashioned geocaching and scavenger hunts be more fun? More challenging plus you can actually look around (as opposed to a screen)?

ParticipantYeah I am sitting here laughing. The is so much like the geocaching craze. Attracting people into dangerous locations. People so desperate to earn FTF that they are reckess. Utter disregard for private property. Oh and lets not forget you know geocaching in cemeteries.
I loved geocaching but it was filled with morons.
