ParticipantDisregard – the app was giving me an error message that it couldn’t post so I kept trying again. It actually was posting so ended up with duplicates. Apologies! [emoji849]

ParticipantUpdates in final days of Freezing Saddles
First of all, wow! Thank you all!
Thoroughly impressed by the participation and the amazing (and amazing number) of mailboxes everyone has shared this winter. I assumed it would be difficult to find mailboxes (definitely not a daily occurrence), but you all proved me wrong.

>200 mailbox submissions so farKarenbikes2, I assume you have the prize for most mailboxes clinched (although maybe Boomer2U can still pull out a miracle on the Eastern shore
I have no idea how you do it. One thing I like about finding unique mailboxes is that there is not map or website or other “tool” know where to find them. You must stumble upon them. The mostly creative/unique mailbox prize is very much alive, as it only takes one to win. I’ll make a decision after this weekend when FS2021 is complete.
Prizes
I have musette bags for the winners; to help you deliver the mail (or other goods) while on a bike.
Keeping with the Easter Egg theme (since I thought good mailboxes would be hidden & hard to find), I’ll fill w/Easter goodies.I’ll find a safe, socially distanced way to get the prizes delivered.
Thanks again to all who have played.
I’m amazed at some of the really cool mailboxes out there and your good eyes!
I’ll make sure some of my favorites get added to the Google Album (if they are not already there), so the full collection is easy to share/reference long after FS2021 is forgotten.March 18, 2021 at 3:12 am #1113752AlanA

ParticipantThank you bigredboiler for sponsoring such a great and popular pointless prize. I never realized just how creative people are with making their mailboxes unique, and certainly never went hunting for them before. But this game got me hooked, and one day I had become a mailbox hunter! It proved to be a good motivator to get me out the door to ride, and to explore roads less traveled. Thanks again for curating a great game.

ParticipantHaha, Alan, you are too funny! Next time I’m in FL and visit that pond I’ll be sure to bring a letter with me and see if the gator accepts it!

ParticipantBigredboiler, thank you sooooo much for the mailbox game!!! This was my 1st freezing saddles and it took me a while to figure out everything other than “I need to ride at least 1 mile each day and preferably at least 10.” Once I got the hang of the pointless prize games I got hooked on a couple as motivators. The hunt for unique mailboxes was my favorite, and the one most helpful in getting me out and keeping me riding even in the worst weather. Thanks again, and I look forward to meeting you live and in person!

ParticipantFirst, thank you to all who participated. I really enjoyed updating the forum & getting alerts of new postings to the Google Album. Amazed at the many and unique mailboxes you found!
As I mentioned in my last post:
>200 mailboxes sharedThat’s a lot of scavenging over just 78 days.
Second, I’ll keep the Google Album public for easy sharing.
- I will copy/upload many of the mailboxes that are only in the forum today
- Feel free to add any I missed
- Also, feel free to add future mailboxes you find after Freezing Saddles
Now, burying the lead…..on to the prizes!
Most Mailboxes –> Karenbikes2 (Karen Hass)Over 50 mailboxes (that I credited
and almost 90 submitted…yikes!!!
If you want to give away any insights or secrets to how you found some many mailboxes each ride, I’m sure many of us would love you hear from you.
Did you send out scouts in cars? Did you troll Street View? Are you an Uber driver?Only Boomer2U was in your stratosphere.
Most Creative/Unique –> catedrew (Cathleen Drew)for The Corn Mailbox
Well, certainly not an easy choice, but well-deserved!!
When I announced the prize, I did say this would be totally arbitrary and my decision. While that is true, I did solicit feedback from friends & family from a small list of top contenders (I’m a terrible decision maker
The corn was a narrow winner over the Lego mailbox from Erika Gardner (calculated a couple ways using rank-choice voting).
That said, several people who voted (All had no idea about this contest) emailed me to say they really liked all the mailboxes and were impressed with the cool stuff out there.Cathleen & Karen, I have musette bags (that I still need to fill w/Easter candy) for you.
Comments:- I can ride to you to deliver (socially distanced and/or in-person)
- Private message me to discuss/arrange details
- Below is a picture of the musette bag

Other musings:
- Erika – you definitely had the highest efficacy…only 3 submitted, but they were great
- AlanA – loved the viral snowman mailbox…thanks for sharing!
- Karen – you made it challenging to keep count
- I didn’t realize how many shingled rooftop / barn mailboxes there were….one or two were memorable. I like the church w/the colored/stained glass windows for example
- Boomer – you probably rode the most widely varied places to find mailboxes…how many states? At least 3-4 I think.
- Josh – thanks for setting a high bar to start things early on. I thought you were going to win the quantity prize for a few days; I was so wrong
- It is crazy how we still use this forum; very much a love-hate relationship
- I wish Google made it easier to map the locations of these mailboxes
- I definitely look at all mailboxes these days; probably a mailbox stob though, since I hardly glance at wraps, protecting structures, the house/barn styles, or others I’ve seen in numerous places
- I’ll have to think of something to do for next year; maybe Mailboxes can continue (but only for those not already discovered….could be really challenging; maybe easier to score though
- If you have any feedback, suggestions, questions for me, try my here or via PM
Thank you all again!!!
Keep riding!
Be safe!
See you on the road!Kris Stein

(bigredboiler)Not really any secrets to finding the mailboxes that I did, other than riding down every single residential street I passed on my route. No, I am not an Uber driver, and I didn’t do any driving to scout for mailboxes. I do have to confess that there is one that I first saw from my car while running an errand – the church mailbox with the stained glass on Hunter Mill Rd. That mailbox was my primary destination for the next day’s ride. I didn’t troll Google Maps street view to search for mailboxes. For some reason the Reston-Herndon-Vienna area is just rich in unique mailboxes — lots of single family homes owned by folks with time and money for upgrading their mailboxes? At any rate, it was fun and motivated me many a day during the last couple of months! Thanks again, Kris!

(bigredboiler)I rode my bike in 4 different States, and different counties within 2 of those States, for a total of 6 different distinct geographical areas during BAFS2021. It included mostly Northern Virginia, with tangents to Montgomery County MD; Eastern Shore MD; Gettysburg PA; the Poconos PA & Union County NJ.
