ParticipantAfter the chat at District Taco, following the MLK Day cleanup at Belle Haven, I went home to fire up emails about the large sheet of ice on 4 Mile Run Trail, where it passes beneath W. Glebe Road. There has been a seriously inadequate drainage situation there for as far as I remember — the trail surface seems to dip slightly lower than the 3 drain holes cut into the concrete… so a small pond forms after every rain. Anyway, I used the 311 and the Trails email Judd mentioned, and today I got a response (from the Trails email) that they’re sending a team to look at treating the ice (it was still iced over on my commute in this morning.) And that they would see what, if anything could be done (he didn’t sound optimistic) about improving the drainage there…
Woohoo! Of course today will warm a bit, so by the time I bike home, melting may have helped the ice — but hopefully the team dispatched will also either break it up, or treat it perhaps, etc…
{EDIT: Also in the email response — he confirmed this part of the the trail, while technically in Alexandria, is maintained by Arlington.}January 23, 2019 at 4:22 pm #1094609Judd

An additional 1 point has been awarded for an excellent and detailed write up. 2 additional points for demonstrating the exponential power of taking action (in this case attending MLK Day led to knowledge to fix lots of other issues.) Four points!

ParticipantHey Judd… If something is potentially eligible for your consideration of points… do I have to post it here, if I already posted elsewhere (that you probably read already)?
ie, such as clearing the Limes tonight: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?12332-Dockless-Bikeshare-The-Dockpocalypse-Nears&p=186353#post186353
Eager to see the latest K/QOT listing after MLK and any others I may have picked up

The best bet is to always link the post from the other thread here as I don’t always read every thread. I also generally do the QOT/KOT scoring from my laptop versus my phone, which means that there’s an opportunity to miss scoring something when I check back in on my laptop. I also do all of the spreadsheet updating from my laptop since it involves navigating multiple tabs.

Chris B gets two points for “Lumberjacking” the four Lime Bikes that were blocking a key trail connection. An additional point has been awarded for reporting to Lime Bike. 3 points!

ParticipantThe KOT and QOT standings have been updated. The field is currently being dominated by people named Chris. Josephine might have to change her name to fit in. Full standings are here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ehDM7UpJs2hVvBvXQ3NiUlqRaBmnyRFx9VHit09uni4/edit#gid=1533226411 Please let me know if I have made any mistakes on the scoring sheet.
Josephine is still in the lead for the Queen standings but Chris W is right behind her. Sarah Bee is going to need to organize some events or come to the Four Mile Run cleanups in order to get back in the game.

ParticipantIf you happened to be up late last night and saw the standings update, there was an error that impacted the KOT scores. I’ve updated the scores in the post above.

ParticipantOne of my best rides after moving back to DC was bobco giving me a personal tour of the Potomac Yard Trail and Arlington Loop. It did a lot to increase my confidence in cycling the other side of the river and probably saved me some close calls at the IOD. So, it was a treat to do the same for a friend last night, showing him the way from Ballston to Mt. Pleasant via the Custis and Rock Creek trails. We hit up neighborhood bars (Marx Cafe and Raven Grille) before and after his meeting.
He’s Belgian and has rather strong views on food & drink, so I was delighted when he declared Port City’s Optimal Wit to be a very good Belgian-style wheat beer (a style he noted isn’t so popular in Belgium anymore).
Here he is starting his journey back to Virginia at the end of the night:

ParticipantMy good deed for the day: reporting the tree that is down on the CCT. Usually, this would be simple–just call the National Park Service. Today, not so much. None of the numbers at the National Park Service are answering. DC311 wanted an exact street address, and was mystified by the idea of a place without a street address. DCDOT was also a bit mystified, but says they will call around and see what they can do.
I’ve also reported it on the WABA Women and Bicycles and Capital Crescent Users Group Facebook pages. And I reported it using See-Click-Fix.

Sam scores the first points in the category for showing someone a new trail. This is my favorite category because I’m in debt to those who have shown me new trails and routes.
5 points for the Custis and 5 points for the Rock Creek Trail. One bonus point because it looks like your friend is kicking a car. 11 points!

Carol scores one point for reporting a trail problem to NPS and 1 point for reporting it to DDOT and 1 point for reporting it to Facebook and 1 point for reporting it to the forum. 4 points!
Since it appears this might not get removed by a government agency, there are some major KOT and QOT points on the table.

Chris B gets two points for lumberjacking a trash can that was blocking a sidewalk. An additional point has been awarded for defeating Emm’s trashcan NIMBYism.
3 points!

ParticipantChris M is still in the lead for King of the Trail with 49 points, but Chris B is right behind him with 45 points. Turn that raging competitiveness into some good stuff for trails.
