Jo and I went to meet Jeff at Artemisia, but cleared three wooden bridges of ice and snow and missed him.
We later ran into Millie, and cleared the trail (as much as we could) of a just fallen tree.
Jeff gets 15 points for organizing a trail event. I’ll consider bonus points if he posts something. 15 points!
Ricky gets 5 points for participating in a trail event. Double points because snow and carrying a shovel by bike is hard. 5 additional points for moving a tree off the trail by bunny hopping it. 15 points!
Jo gets 5 points for participating in a trail event with the snow sucks doubler. 5 additional points have been awarded for cramming so much awesome into a small package. 15 points!
Millie gets 5 points for participating in a trail event with the snow sucks double point modifier. Five additional points have been added because she brought me donut holes on the NE Branch trail once and that was a totally awesome way to support trails. 15 points!

Chris you’re famous on the Internet.
Thanks for sharing this, Josh – I was trying to figure out who the 3 helpers may have been to thank them again, but nothing turned up on the Strava flybys of my ride. (This was the 3rd person who stopped to help; I noticed him lining up the action-shot selfie, but didn’t realize he was trying to make sure I was in frame as well.)

Boomer gets two points for a random act of goodness for removing tree branches from the trail. One bonus point has been added for hauling so much gear on a folding bike. Three points!

When you stop to remove something dangerous from the trail we all win.

ParticipantNot sure if a protected bike lane counts, but–as one would expect from me–I removed a dangerous bollard from the Eads St. bike lane.

That’s so awesome! How long did it take to cut through the tree?

ParticipantGreat outing today, Judd, helping to clean up trash from Belle Haven Park and northward! I was surprised how bearable 22 degrees could be!
I seemed to be on a mission to fill my bag with just small and annoying things, apparently… was hoping that in our 2 hours I would fill perhaps, 3 or 4 bags with bulkier, uglier stuff — but no, it was hundreds of cigarette butts, food wrappers, cigarillo tips, and more chunky small bits of styrofoam (smaller than an egg, generally) than I would’ve ever hoped to see (and so much more unfortunately left behind, because it was frozen into the soil.) I also dug out several partially-buried items (2 golfballs, 3 prominent bottle lids, a cigarette lighter) — I must remember to bring a pick or screwdriver next time, to tackle the hard soil! My largest item was probably only a plastic water bottle (several) yet with all the teensy debris, my garbage bag still reached a surprising weight! (A frozen sock, and a frozen hand towel probably helped
It would be interesting to tackle this same stretch in early spring (at a low tide) to get more of that damned styrofoam picked up…
I say, following the public push and outcry to eliminate plastic straws (I only picked up 4) the very next thing should be to consider banning the use of styrofoam!January 21, 2019 at 10:39 pm #1094508komorebi
ParticipantMega kudos to everyone who came out today in the cold and the wind! I’m guessing that 30-40 people showed up, including forum members caseykane50, CBGanimal, Christob50, dbb, Emm, Judd, KWL, scoot, secstate, Steve O, and a bunch of others I missed because everyone was incognito under all those layers.
Today I learned:
- On a blustery day, stepping on the bottom of your trash bag is a good way to hold the bag in place. Otherwise, your bag might get blown upside down, and all trash you’ve just painstakingly picked up might get dumped back on the ground. Ask me how I know that.
- I really, really hate styrofoam.
- This would have been a perfect day to bust out the cargo bike trailer that’s been sitting in my basement for the past few weeks.
- Snow boots, two layers of socks, and toe warmers kept my feet surprisingly comfortable. I need to find a better solution for my hands, though.
- I really, really hate styrofoam.
- When you spot two bald eagles, while volunteering to clean up a national park, on a national day of service — well, it doesn’t get much better than that.
- Did I mention that I really, really hate styrofoam?

ParticipantJudd – The MLK Day of Service MVT event was nicely organized. Kudos to you and komorebi. Give yourself extra KOT points. I also was gobsmacked by the amount of really irritating Styrofoam all over the place. DC banned the stuff 1/1/16. Now we need to get the upriver towns and maybe state of Maryland and commonwealth of Virginia to do likewise. Next time I’m bring a small rake to gather up the small bits.
My fingers were hurting at the end. Should have gone with lobster mitts and 3 hand warmers in each.

When I was a mountain biker, I used to carry a thing called a pocket chain saw that I got from a camping supply store. I think it would have made shorter work of the log than the machete.
