ParticipantSince (1) that turn ALWAYS annoys me after a snowstorm and (2) we now have a pint-sized shovel that’s easy to grab and go – I took some time to clear out the transition from 8th NE to the “no cars allowed” part on the MBT. (The DDOT truck took care of most of the trail, but couldn’t deal with that transition.) Hopefully the efforts will pay off in an easier commute tomorrow morning

This point system appears to be totally arbitrary. 👍

In the interest of full disclosure, I arrived too late and missed the cleanup crew. I did, however, pick up a few plastic bottles and recycled them when I got home.
Adjusting score.
-5 points for not making it to the event.
2 points for honesty and 2 points picking up bottles along the trail.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Nice!
Two points for a random act of goodness. Four additional points for it being a particularly strenuous act of goodness. Two more points for reducing the likelihood of someone being injured on a trail. Two more points for getting a cyclist doing a good thing noticed by DDOT. 10 points!
On a personal note it has been awesome to see your transition from guy who posted on the forum to guy who has been on tv talking about biking and who stops to fix a trouble spot on a trail. I’m glad to have you as a friend.

There is a base point system that is non arbitrary. Awarding bonus points is hopefully encouragement for people to add good descriptions of their activity as well as make the thread a bit more fun.
I’m impressed by all of the great things forum members have done for our trails this week. We’ve had a downed tree moved off of the trail, trash picked up and a dangerous snow patch removed.
I was talking to Casey Kane about his effort to move the tree blocking the MVT this week and he commented on the number of people that went around while he was out there. Our trails are much better when we all see an issue and work directly to fix it.
Thank you to everyone who was a trail steward this week. I’m looking forward to the good things that next week will bring.

Well, I have you to thank for the TV interview as I recall. And on a personal note, I have the collective you to thank for being an amazing group of people who have taught me how wonderful and enriching biking can be, and for providing such wonderful examples of things I can do to make it even better for more people. And for putting up with my intense awkward shyness
I could never have dreamed of how impactful this community could be on me (for the better) when I signed up for my first Freezing Saddles two+ years ago. I thought I was just joining some competition that would encourage me to ride in winter, and had little notion of meeting people, let along making friends. I am so thankful that I was completely off in my expectations.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to find out who started chopping onions…

ParticipantI went back this morning to finish what I started, since the snow just kept falling, and falling, and falling. Much easier having gotten the base layer dealt with yesterday, though using the bigger shovel may have had something to do with it.

Then – after tackling the flexpost-protected snow by T St. and after a quick errand – on my way to see how the MVT is shaping up, I got distracted by the mess left behind south of R street, so did what I could to make it more passable. Ran out of steam by NY Avenue, though.

Hope the cleanup in VA is going smoother than that section of the MBT was!

ParticipantI planned to join the crew on the MVT, but got distracted by ample opportunities on the WOD. After a couple of hours shoveling, there is now a clear path between 50 and Carlin Springs. I also did some shoveling just west of Columbia Pike. Still lots to do and with the refreeze already underway, it will be icy tomorrow morning so early commuters be careful!

After a couple of hours of shoveling (after shoveling out at home), I was pretty tired and decided to head home.

Two points for returning to the prior days scene and for a revengeful act of goodness. Two more points for the additional trail section act of goodness. Double points have been applied because snow shoveling is hard. Five more points because you made a large section of the Met Branch Trail safe and useable for people walking and biking (and is also my favorite part of the MBT). Thirteen pointer! Nice!

2 points for a shoveling act of goodness. Double points because shoveling is hard. One point for a valiant attempt to come to a Friends of Mount Vernon Trail event. Two points for excellent snow shovel hauling technique. Seven points!

Five points to Mr. Happy for attending a trail maintenance event. Double points awarded for this event. One additional point for posting a picture with me in the background. 11 points!

ParticipantI can’t say thank you enough to the extraordinary crew who came out to shovel the MVT today: caseykane50, CBGanimal, Christob50, Coppertop222, dachs6, KWL, LeprosyStudyGroup, Judd, Judd’s Twitter friend, and Steve O.
Before:
After:
Some of the group in action (and possibly Christob50’s only break during the whole afternoon):
A good day’s work:
When I first arrived, I saw that the ramp leading down to the wooden bridge hadn’t been cleared, but the bridge itself had been cleared and salted, as had the trail through the LBJ Grove. The sun had just come out, the sky was blue, and the day was warming up. “This isn’t going to be too bad,” I thought.
Famous last words. As soon as I got to the southern end of the Columbia Island Marina parking lot, I saw that the trail leading to the Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial hadn’t been cleared at all. My heart sank. Given the amount of snow, I figured we’d be lucky to finish clearing the trail circling around the memorial; the Humpback Bridge and the connection to the 14th Street Bridge would have to wait for another day.
I’ve never been so glad to be wrong. We cleared the trail all the way to the base of the 14th Street Bridge, thanks to this extraordinary crew’s hard work and strong backs. You all motivated me to keep going when I was exhausted, stepped in every time I needed a break, and kept up the good cheer throughout. You all amaze and inspire me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
P.S. I apologize for not bringing more water. I’ll bring more next time, I promise!
