A few folks today engaged in some “tactical urbanism” to put in place some temporary protections on the MBT at K Street NE. On Wednesday, the zebras/flexposts were removed so that the road could be repaved. After all of the damaged done by the construction vehicles for 100K, this was long overdue. However, they left for the day without restriping any lanes, reinstalling the permanent cycletrack protections, or putting up some temporary barriers. This made that intersection very unsafe for cyclists, especially those heading south. Cars took advantage of the lack of barriers to take sharp right turns on red at speed, or to park there for ridesharing pickups/dropoffs (even more than normal). On Friday, DDOT sent some folks out who confirmed what had been reported, but did not take any temporary measures.
With that backdrop, today showed how easy DDOT (or their contractors) could’ve done something that would’ve immeasurably improved the safety of the jobsite they left. First: on my way back home from a quick breakfast out with M, I borrowed an orange barrel from the “someday” construction site next door, to at least put one visual cue that cars should go around. Of course, an Uber driver then went around it to park, but at least had to slow down for his turn.

Later this morning, some friends who are far more experienced in tactical urbanism than I found some orange cones and other materials nearby, including the previously installed protections, and set up a much nicer barrier.

Chris M gets two points for a solo act of rebuilding the MBT. 10 additional points have been awarded for laying the cornerstone of a tactical cycletrack. 12 points!

ParticipantIt was long past time for this rusty old bollard to go, so it got pushed over.

It’s at the top of the path from the Marine Memorial. I was not strong enough to push it off the path, and I was a little nervous leaving just the pointy shards there for someone to flat on, but the authorities have been notified.

ParticipantDuring my evening ride to REI (because I’m an idiot and thought the member bonus card I got from a previous visit expired today, not tomorrow): a pair of Birds was discarded near the bottom of the ramp to M Street on the MBT, blocking one side of the trail. It would’ve been an unwelcome surprise to someone taking the turn onto the ramp at speed in an attempt to get up the incline with some retained momentum.

Using Lumberjacking skills displayed by many in this thread (as originated by the prize sponsor)*, I moved the scooters around the corner to be with a Lime friend by the MBT meeting point.

ParticipantMore TL/TV with QPB!
Tonight was my first Quick Pick of March, along the usual stretch, managing 2 bags. A pedestrian said “Thanks so much!” which was nice! (And 3 cyclists asked “everything ok?” as they slowed… all in all a friendly night!) Added to the Trash Virtual Wardrobe; 1 hair net and 1 sock.
(Doh! I missed that trash under the bench when I stopped at the trashcan… grrr!)March 7, 2019 at 2:11 am #1096490LhasaCM
ParticipantAs we got close to home tonight, I saw in the distance a Jump bike strewn across the MBT, blocking one side entirely. The cyclist just ahead of me stopped to try to move it over, and though he was eager, he was inexperienced in the maneuver (he tried to stand up the Jump bike while still astride his ride, almost causing both to tumble to the ground as he was not expecting the weight of the front wheel/motor).

I stopped, and while M manned our bike, I helped move the Jump bike to the side of the trail.

As the gentleman went on his way, I snapped a quick picture of the rear of the bike (with the number) to report its status to Jump so it could be retrieved if necessary.

Too funny! I couldn’t stop tonight, but as I made that dogleg turn to go under W. Glebe, I saw that “enclosed” grassy area and thought that would be my next pick!

ParticipantA double whammy today (after yoga stretch and tasty bites at 4MR Farmers Market!) with a Lumberjacking near the airport on MVT, and then 2 bags of trash along 4MR… at a new stretch for me, near the eastern end of water treatment plant, as I spotted a child’s ball down on the mud-flat/shoreline, and decided to fill my bags there. Much styrofoam and water bottles… and maybe a soccer ball lost by Mr. Happy or his friends? (Shown sitting on my saddle.)

ParticipantOooh! I realized that I tapped a new category for me, for points last night, by attending the Alexandria BPAC meeting with Judd, SteveO, LOTM and Josephine…!

ParticipantRiding in on the Custis this morning, just before Glebe Road, I spotted this plastic bag on the trail
Inspired by the work of others on this thread, I took five minutes to grab some litter that had collected alongside the trail nearby.
I then put the trash-filled bag in my pannier
And deposited it in a nearby trash receptacle

ParticipantI need to hold onto my third place spot, so I’d like to request points for attending the FOTMVT meeting on Sunday, and can link to my strava ride if needed (although I’d hope you’d remember I attended, Judd…).

ParticipantBack to the richly fertile litter landscape of my “Swisher Sweet Street” for 2 bags around Mt Vernon Ave underpass and west.
Then I spotted the vast billowing bright green “spill” into 4MR stream and phoned it in to Water/Sewer Dept. who said they’d investigate…
Managed a waving shadow selfie in this pic, against the fencing behind…
