ParticipantAn evil strand of thorns was covering over half the path along the switchback between Potomac Ave and 4mrt.
Many fingers were pricked and bloodied and a shirt snagged on thorns, but I persevered in an effort to save my fellow cyclists and pedestrians from the evil thorn monster.
The trail is safe again… For now.

ParticipantI’m loving all the random acts of trail goodness I’m seeing today. These small acts can often have a huge impact on others by removing a risk of injury, inspiring others to act and creating a culture that values our trails and each other’s well being.

Well then, since there seems to be precedent for claiming overlooked efforts, I submit the following claim for points.
Attendance at two well-run and led FotMVT meetings. One added feature at FotMTV meetings is the food and beer available at every meeting.

- February 10
Responding to a tree down on the Mount Vernon Trail on January 10. I enlisted the assistance of another cyclist to help clear the trail. While we were unable to move the tree, we did clear a pathway to make it safer for trail users. In addition, I rode down Union Street to obtain safety tape from a contractor to alert users of the hazard.

Casey gets 4 points for attending the January 12th Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail Meeting. One additional bonus point because I think he might have bought me a beer during our meeting’s traditional midway bathroom and beer break.
Casey gets 4 points for attending the February 10th FOMVT Meeting.
Case gets 2 points for an act of trail goodness for removing parts of a downed tree on the MVT. Two additional points for enlisting the help of another trail user and for procuring safety tape. 13 points!February 15, 2019 at 10:17 pm #1095691Judd

Submitted for Pointless Prize points consideration… 2 opportunities to spread some trail love on Valentines Day!
Perhaps one of the most blatantly poor parkings of an abandoned scooter I’ve seen — ALMOST dead centered on the Potomac Yard Trail, ALMOST fully perpendicular to the trail traffic — and just 3 feet away from a ready-made, ideal scooter parking spot!
And then in the category of “Oh, hell no!” — during the same ride, headed home, while cruising along the S 4 Mile Run Park towards the Conservatory building, where we had just convened last weekend for a stream & shore cleanup — I spotted over on the Arlington side (the side I’d worked on during the cleanup) a huge bright blue something… I thought maybe a capsized kayak, but quickly realized no. I went over to the Arl. side, parked the bike on top of the ridge, and scrambled down to the water line — it was a massive sheet of foam insulation. So I brought it back up and added to our still-there pile of yellow trash bags — weighting it down with a few so it won’t blow away, hopefully.
Chris B gets two points for a random act of goodness for removing a menacing scooter from the Potomac Yard Trail.
Chris B gets two points for a random act of goodness for removing a giant piece of styrofoam from Four Mile Run. An extra point has been awarded for saving us from cleaning up 27 million pieces of foam at a future cleanup. 5 points!February 15, 2019 at 10:20 pm #1095692Judd

I’ve been taking 4MR more lately and have noticed a lot of debris along the trail, especially along Glebe and behind the construction fence. So I brought a grocery bag with me this morning and decided to do a “quick pick”. The bag was full in just a couple of minutes and I was on my way. I’m going to start keeping extra grocery bags in my bag so I can do more quick picks on my commute.
Robyne gets two points for a random act of trail goodness for a quick pick cleanup. An additional point has been awarded for inventing the bike version of plogging. Carrying a small plastic bag is a great idea that I’m going to steal. 3 points!

ParticipantMore trail love…!
Taking up reji’s excellent, nay, ELITE idea, I packed 5 grocery bags for my leisure ride today, intending to tackle 4MR Trail where it passes under Mt. Vernon Ave. I also decided to toss in heavy-duty thick rubber dishwashing gloves I had. I did not, however, have the brilliant idea to pack an alternative pair of shoes… my cleats and the shoes overall will need much love this evening, getting them cleaned up — at one point, I took a step onto dry leaves and nearly sank to my ankle into mud.I finally arrived at my trash-starting point — (A) in the route image — around 2:40, and spent the next hour and 20 there, slowly moving along the trail to my ending point — (
— and grabbing all the trash I could find on both sides of the trail. (A surprising amount of broken glass at the edges of the trails — I was happy to have the thick gloves, which let me “sweep it up” with my hands.) I filled all 5 of my bags, plus two more bags that I found as trash, and needed in order to continue! At one point, I had most of those hanging from my bike as I would have to move my bike periodically so I never got too far away from it.
Not surprisingly (based on the Conservatory cleanup day’s haul) — probably a hundred Swisher Sweets wrappers were in the mix. But lots of other junk, and I was intrigued by the number of very tiny zip-lock bags I picked up — roughly 1-inch square bags with a tiny ziplock end. Also, I think a lot of black plastic that looked to be a byproduct of the temporary sewer pipe project (or its demolition) earlier.
Next leisure outing I will pack twice as many bags or more, to continue cleaning westward — I stopped just before the construction area, which is just as inundated with trash.
Trash Route from A to B
A before-and-after (I should have taken many more pics!)
I decided to finger-rake through the leaves, and found many more bottles and cans hidden beneath…
Nearly done – one more bag found and used to hold more trash after this shot, before depositing them all in the circled trash can and calling it a day.

Chris B gets two points for deliberately random act of trail goodness. One additional point for the advanced trash picking technique of using a bike like a pack mule. One additional point for being of such pure heart that you don’t know how the tiny ziplock bags got there. One more point for a detailed write up with annotated maps and photographs. 5 points!
As a side note, Ursula from the WABA Trail Ranger program advises that if you’re cleaning up broken glass that putting it in a paper bag is effective. The glass won’t cut through a paper bag easily, but it tends to rip through plastic bags.

A belated thank you for moving this scooter. I saw it on my way home that night. That section of the trail isn’t well-lit, so there’s a good chance I would have run headlong into the scooter if you hadn’t moved it.

Brilliant! And thank you in particular for taking the time to pick up all the broken glass. You probably saved a bunch of cyclists from getting flats, and a bunch of dogs from getting cuts in their paws.

Oh no! I better bank some points before everyone passes me this weekend.
On Friday night, someone left a e-scooter on the ramp leading up from the MVT to the 14th Street bridge. The scooter, being a particularly dastardly sort, then apparently decided to lie down in the middle of the trail, so that it could more easily camouflage itself and then jump out to bite unwary trail users. I eventually convinced the scooter that the somewhat overgrown grassy median strip would be an even better hiding place.

ParticipantChristob50’s efforts were most evident yesterday when I rode through, thank you!!! I stopped when I rode home yesterday for another Quick Pick and added another bag to the same trash can that Christob50 filled up!

Also, you never know what you’ll find …. I scored 36 cents AND, best of all, a VINTAGE BAFS zipper pull! I hear the most valuable ones are those that have been autographed by Komorebi, but I’m keeping this one anyway.

Two points for a random act of trail goodness for convincing the scooter to find a new home. One bonus point for employing a non-adversarial advocacy technique.
