On Friday the 11th, I helped person the table at Alexandria Winter Bike to Work Day. I spoke with a couple of people about biking in the area, suggested a bike shop, and plugged BPAC. I exchanged thoughts and ideas with a City employee, with the new WABA Exec director, and with a certain gentleman from BikeArlington.

    On Sunday the 13th, I reviewed the proposed charter for the Communications Committee of the Alexandria Industrial Development Authority board. I also reviewed some material for Liveable Alexandria, the pro transit, pro housing group I am involved with – on the 11th I sent an email to Council supporting a new committed affordable housing project in the West End.

    Volunteered again at the Rockville Bike Hub today. We have gently-used bike clothing, hitch racks and used bikes if anyone is interested in stopping by 10 N Washington Street in Rockville.

    I volunteered at the FOMVT trash pickup at Gravelly Point today.

    My personal haul included a pizza box, two glass bottles, a toy jet, three facemasks, too many napkins to count, and enough fiddly little bits of styrofoam that I might go Hulk on the next styrofoam container I see.

    I’m awarding 50 points for the effort and for a long history of blood donations.

    @Steve O 215963 wrote:

    Well, I tried.
    I’ve been giving blood for decades. I made an appointment for Monday afternoon to give a double-red donation at the donor center on E St. in DC.

    When I got there I was told it would be a 45-minute wait (plus, from past experience, the almost 2 hours it actually takes–which is also absurdly inefficient). That was unacceptable, especially since I had an actual appointment. I left.

    After a couple of follow-up conversations with Red Cross people, I have learned something. Yes, there is a blood shortage nationwide. However, that blood shortage has nothing to do with lack of donors, which is what their marketing seems to imply. I had to wait weeks just to get an appointment, because they are completely booked. The shortage is a problem with staffing; there is no shortage of donors. If anything, there are too many donors.

    So my giving blood or not will make no difference in the blood supply. Knowing that, I am not willing to put up with the nonsense of interminable waiting to give blood that someone else would give if I weren’t there. Same amount of blood collected either way.

    So no points for me.

    I spent the afternoon in the Red Cross blood donation center downtown. (And I heard a similar story—staffing shortages prevent more blood collection events). I did not have to wait as long as you Steve-about an hour, in and out1f6d6bd3692e8854fb39aa4c9926f75b.jpg

    Biked over to join the Four Mile Run Conservancy yesterday for a stream bed clean up along the Four Mile Run trail (note the bicycling connection[emoji1]). Lotta trash out there. 821f3bad4f1109cb8653d5b8946619a2.jpg
    A couple of wet shoes later (fortunately not my bike shoes), we’d each picked up 2+trash bags full!

    5 points for bike to work day advocacy. I’m going to pretend that you rode your bike around your living room while doing the stuff on the 13th to award 5 points. 10 points.
