ParticipantWell, I tried.
I’ve been giving blood for decades. I made an appointment for Monday afternoon to give a double-red donation at the donor center on E St. in DC.When I got there I was told it would be a 45-minute wait (plus, from past experience, the almost 2 hours it actually takes–which is also absurdly inefficient). That was unacceptable, especially since I had an actual appointment. I left.
After a couple of follow-up conversations with Red Cross people, I have learned something. Yes, there is a blood shortage nationwide. However, that blood shortage has nothing to do with lack of donors, which is what their marketing seems to imply. I had to wait weeks just to get an appointment, because they are completely booked. The shortage is a problem with staffing; there is no shortage of donors. If anything, there are too many donors.
So my giving blood or not will make no difference in the blood supply. Knowing that, I am not willing to put up with the nonsense of interminable waiting to give blood that someone else would give if I weren’t there. Same amount of blood collected either way.
So no points for me.

ParticipantI spent the afternoon in the Red Cross blood donation center downtown. (And I heard a similar story—staffing shortages prevent more blood collection events). I did not have to wait as long as you Steve-about an hour, in and out

ParticipantBiked over to join the Four Mile Run Conservancy yesterday for a stream bed clean up along the Four Mile Run trail (note the bicycling connection[emoji1]). Lotta trash out there.
A couple of wet shoes later (fortunately not my bike shoes), we’d each picked up 2+trash bags full!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
