You can see it in action tomorrow! We’re actually looking for assistance in helping with the details of the bike network and local rider knowledge is appreciated. We’re getting a group of planners and cyclists together tomorrow to discuss all this and provide input. It is during most people’s work hours, but we may try to do an “after hours” meeting at some point in the future if there seems like a need for it. See below for the official invitation:
Please join us in a development session for an exciting new online bike routing app for the Washington DC area. This app will provide point-to-point directions that are optimal for biking and are tailored to the user. Capital Bikeshare station locations and real-time bike availability will be incorporated. For a sample of what this app will look like check out the New York City version that Open Plans has already developed. This app is being developed as a free web and smartphone application by Open Plans in collaboration with MapBox, BikeArlington, goDCgo and Mobility Lab.
Open Plans has built a base map for the Washington version based on OpenStreetMap data. Now your input is needed to refine the app, in particular with the unique connections, cut-throughs and hard-to-find links that local area bikers and mapping enthusiasts know about. Inserting these “secret links” into the map will provide a powerful app that will assist everyone on two wheels, making it even easier to get around by bike. We will also be evaluating the data to make sure it fully reflects the bike restrictions and hazards, ensuring that we help users plan safe and legal trips. Please accept this invitation if you will attend, and feel free to pass this invitation on to friends and colleagues who have detailed knowledge of the biking network of D.C., Arlington and Alexandria.
If you have any questions about the session or the app, please contact either:
