The salmon-colored compound (at least the Kool Stop brand) pads are designed to maintain stopping power in wet conditions. I have them on two bikes and I’m a fan.

The discussions I’ve seen on this topic are that the Koolstop salmons have better performance in wet conditions. I have used both with cantilever brakes on an older bike and have to say I never could tell the difference, but then those weren’t particularly stong brakes anyway.

I’ve had much better luck with the salmon pads on my cross bike than whatever was on there before.

The side benefit is that the brake dust is lighter-colored than with dark pads…

I also opted for the salmon kool stop pads over black for two of my bikes. They’re much better than that stock avid pads that were on my brakes before.

Salmons on everything but the new cross bike. So far the black SRAM pads on the Avid shorty ultimates I’m running on that do a great job.

I like the pads that came with my SRAM calipers as well – I think SwissStop makes them. Haven’t tried them in the wet yet.

The salmon Kool Stops, at least to me, are much more progressive than the blacks, which tend to be grabby in the dry. The salmons are also consistent in variable conditions.

    Salmon shoes match my purse.
