Those of you who participated in the King and Queen of the Trail Freezing Saddles competition two years ago our participated in one of the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail cleanups will be pleased to know that Virginia passed legislation this year allowing municipalities to impose a 5 cent plastic bag fee. EcoAction Arlington has launched a petition to ask Arlington County to adopt an ordinance imposing this fee.

You’ve probably noticed lots of plastic waste on the trails and the nearby water ways. A bag fee would have a profound impact on reducing plastic pollution. DC’s program led to an 80% reduction in plastic bag pollution while also providing funding towards the goal of making the Anacostia River swimmable and fishable. For the first two years, retailers would receive 2 cents of each fee. After 2023, retailers would receive 1 cent of each fee.
I appreciate folks signing the petition. I’m also writing to my legislators in Alexandria and requesting that they adopt a bag fee ordinance.
Wonderful news! The cleanup pointless prize was probably my favorite of all time. Super fun to do with friends and major impact to our beautiful trail system!
