I haven’t even been able to begin to process this. On one hand I feel like I barely knew him, and on the other he undoubtedly made me a better person. Every singe time I’ve had what could have been a bad interaction with an inattentive driver but instead turned out well, it’s been because I was able to channel Pete’s positive vibes. I hear his voice in my head ALL THE TIME when I’m riding my bike, and every time it nudges me in a better direction.
I’m stuck on my fixie this week while my Bianchi is in the shop and coming home from a work errand, I rode it up the biggest hill in the neighborhood in Pete’s honor.
This photo he took after a 2015 Friday Coffee Club is particularly hard but I’m really glad I have it.

Thanks for posting. This is a lovely picture but now it just makes me so sad to look at it. Better and happier times.

A year ago, Pete did a Bikenetic ride down to 12th & Florida NE, to the place where Dave Salovesh died. The day before, the first attempt at a ghost bike was installed (for date reference, #Bobco85 was back in town and rode with #Steve O the night before). Pete’s enormous humanity showed, the whole way. (Photo by #Boomer2U)
Now I have my own journey to make to Lake Accotink, to sit at that place and find some sort of closure. Probably midday…

Thanks for sharing the photo and story. I think I may try to make my own pilgrimage after 3 today when work and child duties lift for the afternoon. #dirttherapy

ParticipantI think Pete was sending me a message today as I walked through Harris Teeter to pick up my lunch.

ParticipantI am planning to do a tribute ride tomorrow (Saturday 9/5) afternoon. Do I have the spot correct? — Looks like the curve on the trail just south of King’s Glen Elementary School and Clydesdale Rd.

ParticipantA journey, to the western edge of Lake Accotink Trail:
This is a connector to the trail where Danbury Forest Road ends. Steeply graded- evasive action in either direction would not have been easy. Someone had already been there (Bikenetic?) and left flowers. I left my own modest memorial.

ParticipantI will confess feeling a state of anxiety traveling to this place.
I felt much more at peace afterwards, and could enjoy dancing with the Trek on gravel finishing the loop.

“Pete is with us, man!” I have a mystery as well- my cover photo on FB changed, and I have no idea how I did that! Pete???

ParticipantPete sent me another message while riding my bike today. A Jack Taylor’s Alexandria Toyota loaner car passed me in the Potomac Yard shopping center; license plate number: JTAT69. I had a good chuckle over that. Too bad I couldn’t get the camera out quick enough.
And here’s my sad attempt at a Danger Panda. My hands are off the bars but I can’t get into that “reclined” aerial position. Yet.

I’d like to go out there too. Let me know when you’re planning to go.

ParticipantNot everyone in the neighborhood knows that someone died there. I encountered a few locals for whom I was the bearer of that news. And midway through my stay, a roadie in the full green Kelly race kit came powering through out-of-saddle. Life goes on…

ParticipantFor those who wish to visit this impromptu shrine and are new to Lake Accotink Park: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lake-accotink
I parked by the dam at the east end and rode. Advisory- the trail is largely gravel. I quickly realized I had to drop my road tire pressures. Drastically. Two steps later, “Hey! That’s much better!” and I was able to tackle the most technical terrain I had ever attempted on my 412. My first time ever on this trail. Pete would approve.
Alternately, you can access the site by neighborhood roads (Danbury Forest Road, off of Braddock Rd., or from Rolling Road).

ParticipantI made a pilgrimage to Lake Accotink today and added a few items to the memorial. Being there made it more real but I still can’t believe this is true. I noted that the site is on a trail access spur so Pete was either just getting there or just leaving. I’d like to think he’d just finished his loop with a big smile on his face. #RIPpete #wsgfabr #youareloved

ParticipantI got out there today, too. It was my first time on the Lake Accotink trails, but I managed to avoid most of the gravel. The tribute was very moving. I talked to several locals, many of whom knew that someone had been killed there, but were wondering why the news hadn’t made it to the local news.
