I have the second ones. There’s really no grip on the flat side, so you’re right that they’re probably slippy. But I find that I almost never use that side, and have even thought about replacing them with pedals with clips on both sides, so I’m not all that qualified to talk about them. LBS would probably let you test them out?

Kel, I have a pair of the second ones that I am not using if you want them. You can try them out.

I switched to Frogs. (werent you having knee problems?? Frogs are suppose to be better for knees. More float.)

If Kel doesn’t want them, I’ve been wanting to try them out.

The Bike of Weighty Doom has double-sided SPDs, I was just thinking it might be nice to be able to ride down to the store or whatever in regular shoes on Hypothetical New Bike. :D

I’m not a fan of dual pedals. They tend to be frustrating to use as clipless (since you have to flip them around while riding to clip in sometimes) and sucky as platforms. I’d just decide if you want clipless or platforms and get a good pair of whichever you decide on.

I’ve become such a clipless addict that I’d wear bike shoes for such a task. My MTB shoes are just as comfortable to walk in as any of my other shoes, except the occasional grinding when I step on a rock with the cleat…

I guess after eight years of riding on them, it’s just “second nature to me now, like breathing out and breathing in.” ;)

I thought that, too, and never do it. But I suppose I might in the future.

    Yeah, that’s what I’m wondering :D

If Kel passes on them, you can have them. I will just put them in my bag. Seems like I see you on the trail just about every day ;)

Yeah, like others, my solution was clipless frogs, and pearl izumi shoes that are easy to walk in. They work just like regular sneakers so they are good to go for going to the store, or work, or FCC

I have pedals #2 as well. I like them a lot. The flat side is a little slippy, but I tend to use them only when I’m not in a hurry and so it’s not really a big issue. I enjoy having the option to just go somewhere in all normal clothes.

That being said, I wonder if they make more sense for your current bike than the new. I figure the close to home errand running/hanging out stuff mike still be done on the old one, not the new?

Also, part of this probably depends on type of riding, specifically trails vs. streets. If you are clipping back in a lot on city streets, you might not like having to flip them around as much. I ride mostly trail, and so once I’m clipped in, I’m usually there for a while. That probably makes the inconvenience a little less.

+1 on more float. I have used Crank Brothers Candy 1s in the past. They work with SPD cleats.

Shimano pedals are purportedly bomb-proof, so if you don’t explicitly need something else (e.g. with mire float) that sounds like the safe choice.

I use have been using crank bros for many years, because I originally got some pedals for free, but they are really not very durable. I grease them every few months and they still only last me 1 year. Cleats last about the same. I have tried rebuild kits, which extend the life a little in some cases, but I think I will switch over to Shimano spd when the current set dies.

This might be an option, too, though the reviews are pretty mixed.
