I think we all need something to go along with all those coffee rides! Not sure if our esteemed Edelweiss will be offering a donut ride pointless prize but I would like to offer a pastry ride pointless prize. There could be a bit of overlap with cream puffs and Kouign-amann. The rules are similar to chuxtr’s coffee ride.

    1. The object is to visit as many different places serving pastries as possible on a bike. Once you visit one place, that’s it. A second visit to the same venue doesn’t count.

    2. Chains are allowed. However once you visit one chain outlet that’s it. A visit to the same outlet but at a different location doesn’t count.

    3. Bakeries, coffee places, groceries, e.g., Safeway, Whole Foods, and convenience stores for some “swamp” bakeries, e.g., 7-11, Wawa, are fine. The chain rule applies so once you visit one of them that’s it.

    4. For your ride to count, use #FS2019pastryride in your Strava ride title and include the name of the place you visited, e.g., #FS2019pastryride Breadfurst. Not required, but encouraged, is to also post pics on your Strava. And if you want to post your Strava ride link and pics on this thread for all to see, that would be fun too (but not required).

    5. Acceptable forms of pastry. Croissant, pain au chocolat, tarts, macaron, oui. Probably should have consulted someone that bakes but I believe donuts do NOT count unless it is in the form of a cream puff. However, as I understand pies like apple strudel are a type of pastry so they DO count.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastry

    6. You are free to combine this with other rides. Pastries naturally go well with coffee rides.

    7. The winner will be whoever has visited the most different pastry places.

Let me know if there are any questions. Happy nibbling!

#FS2019pastryride #10. Back above freezing with light rain so the snow and ice is gone in Frankfurt. I took out my Salsa Pistola for a road ride stopping at Riedback in the Riedberg neighborhood of Frankfurt. I had a Rosinenbrötchen (like Best Buns raisin Danish) with my Kaffee.

Made a trip to the Fahrradwerkstatt to pick up my Rove after some brake work, but forgot my camera. That didn’t keep me from stopping at Awake on Friedberger Landstaße in Nordend-Ost for a Cafe Crema and Schokocroissant on my way to the CG and home. #FS2019pastryride #11.

#FS2019pastryride #12. Some light snow again in Frankfurt, but much warmer than the DMV. :p I went out and rode a variant of Frankfurt’d GrünGürtel after postponing it three times last week. I stopped at mile 17 for Mittagsessen at the Bäckerei Ewald in Fechenheim, enjoying my hausgemacht Spinat Quiche, Schokohönchen, and of course, Kaffee.

#FS2019pastryride #13. The weather forecast said less than a 5% chance of precipitation this morning, yeah right. Just a little misty as I rolled out at 10:30. I stopped at Brühmarkt at Bockenheimer Warte for an Americano and two mini-Schokobrötchen. Back on the road the mist turned to drizzle, then to light rain with fog as I headed across the fields. Many of the trails hadn’t been cleared (kein Winterdienst) and there were several stretches of soft ice, so between being wet and not having my Pugsley with studded tires I headed home near Nordweststadt instead of continuing on to Oberursel and Bad Homburg. I wasn’t interested in getting London Bridge points, and this ride got my weekly 100 mile points for the team.

#FS2019pastryride #14. Gas station pastry at a Hessol in Massenheim. Very tasty Kirchetasse to go with my Kaffee.

#FS2019pastryride #15. Rode back out to Bad Homburg checking a route to the Taunus Terme. We ate in their cafe, I had a slice of a plum tart to go with my coffee. Sorry, no indoor photos are allowed.

#FS2019pastryride #16. I hadn’t been to the Commissary for a few American specialty items since last September. The first 25 miles was easier than the return 27 with 30 lbs of groceries. Lunch was Popeyes at the Exchange and I stopped at the Backhaus Heislitz in Kriftel on the return trip (mile 38) and refueled with an Apfeltasse and Kaffee.

In case anyone needs some pastry motivation in the DMV, here’s an old article from Eater. There’s quite a few not listed including Heidelberg Pastry in Arlington and Un Je Ne Sais Quoi in Dupont.

#FS2019pastryride #17. Following in the footsteps of the King ride today. I looped through both Frieberg and Bad Nauheim where he was stationed and lived 1958 to 1960. My first stop in Rosbach had no pastry (or anything else to eat), so I had to hold out until I got to Ranstadt where I stopped at Rank’s Stadtbäckerei & Café where I had some sort of Danish with a mixed filling (Apfel und Quark).

     No pastry for you. :(

Winter Bike to Work Day for #FS2019pastryride #18. Hey, it counts if you’re retired and ride to have lunch at your wife’s office, right? After lunch I made a loop through Westend, Bockenheim, Hausen, Oberursel, Bad Homburg, and Kalbach. In Westend I stopped at Les Deux Messieurs for coffee and Apfelkuchen. A very international place, I heard Arabic, Spanish, French, German, English, and a Slavic language I couldn’t identify.

#FS2019pastryride #19. I headed south for a change today for a loop to Rödermark and Messel. My target was the Weller Bäckerei & Konditorei in Messel but I did a loop through the town without seeing it. Then on my way out I realized it was attached to the back end of the Netto grocery. Just outside of Messel is a UNESCO World Heritage site for fossils, one of these days when I am riding by I rally should stop in.

#FS2019pastryride #19. It’s been raining all day so I just got in a short ride. As wet as it was I left the camera at home, so no pictures of my coffee and Kirschstruessel at the Café Laumer in Westend.

#FS2019pastryride #20. I had really intended to get out for a longer ride than this, but we had a housing inspection this morning so I had to get up too early (yeah, I know, it $uck$ to be retired :p) and then I dozed off again. I stopped at the Aveirense Bäckerei, Café, & Portugese groceries in Heddernheim hoping for a Pastel de Nata to go with my coffee. No luck, but still had a tasty Portuguese pastry (some sort of sweet cheese filling).

#FS2019pastryride #22. I rode out to Bad Homburg and spent a couple hours soaking in the warm Taunus Therme. At the end of the ride I stopped at Brot & Freunde on Marbachweg in Dornbusch for my coffee and a Cheddar & Jalapeño Schnecke.

#FS2019pastryride #23. I didn’t roll out until early afternoon and by the time I stopped for my afternoon snack there wasn’t a lot of “pastry” choice at the Bäckerei Bär in Hammersbach. I settled for a Buttercroissant to go with my coffee,
